BETA COURSES

The latest Glen Abbey post got me thinking (always a dangerous event ) How many Beta courses have never been "finalized? Can we generate some kind of list?

I wonder why somebody would take the time to get a course to that stage, and then not finish it? Seems strange, unless it was found to have so many faults it wasn't worth fixing.

I had asked in another thread, but is the Glen Abbey beta from 2014 better than the earlier finished Glen Abbey from 2002?

This might relate to a couple of other issue I raised but I know, for example that there's a BETA of the Hamilton Golf Club (home of the last Canadian Open) that was as close to being "ready to roll" as I've seen (I "Nit-Picked it myself! )

There are some other Canadian courses that haven't reached BETA but, as I said they made (or will make me) very happy.
I'm pretty sure that some BETAs are on other people's wish lists.

Conversely like I said, I'm here and at your service to "Nit-Pick" any APCDers who would like to post a BETA for input. IMHO the more external feedback (especially from people who might live near the course and be familiar with local external features) will be a perfect finishing touch. Look at Lambton for example (even though I'm sure you're sick of me with that one!) That would only work for Real courses of course.

If we can move some of these BETAs to the "Real World" our library will be unbelievable (and we can delete all those BETAs that are cluttering thingp!

I downloaded Andy's csv file on the Courses page. It contains 2237 courses and has a column (Release) that contains either Demo, Alpha, Beta, or Final for every entry.

I opened the csv file in Excel, sorted them by the Course name (Course) and then manually went through the list and visibly checked them. I have included Alpha, Beta, and Demo that never had a Final released. If a course had more than one of that list (Alpha, Beta, Demo) only the most recent is included. If the Course name changed for the Final release I may not have caught them. If it is a John Brooks course it may eventually be changed to Final as that is what it appears he does. Having said all of this, I found 145 courses that have not been 'Finalized' although some of them may still be in the works if they are more recent and by a designer who is still active.

Some "Beta" courses which I think deserve to be called final and recommend for people who otherwise disregard betas:
(not necessarily saying they're 100% flawless but honestly that goes for most (if not to say all) full releases as well)

Oakland Hills South
Ridgewood
Plainfield
Casten Acres
PGA National
Kings Walk (for people who dont use hole previews)

There is also Oakmont 2010 which I dont think should be missed either despite having some blatant problems - most rounds should not be affected.

I must admit, one of those on the list is mine. "Southern Oaks Expanded". I put it up for beta testing, and never received any replies, so I just let it ride as is. This course was my very first work while learning the APCD. Being new at it, I made a lot of common mistakes which causes it to take forever to create the first shadow file and load. Plus it's 257mb in size. It's so big because of all of the different textures I created for all of the hand-built 3D buildings and houses within the course. It takes so long to load because of all of the trees, 2D grasses and plantings. Once it loads and creates the first SHA file, it loads quickly after that.

This is my local hometown 9 hole course. Nothing at all special, just a short little po-dunk country course with some testy greens. I actually built it for the owner, but by the time I got it finished, he had sold the course. I never released the original 9 hole course. I doubt anyone would find it worth keeping or playing. But I have to admit, for my first course, I managed to replicate our local course pretty well.

When I finished the 9 hole course, I decided I would try my own creative skills at designing a back 9, and turning it into an 18 hole course. So I set out to use the surrounding farmland to lay out 9 more holes. It was like 2 different worlds, coming off the easy front 9 and then playing the back 9. I went ahead and released the 18 hole course as a BETA, and as I mentioned, no one responded, so I just left it there.

No need for me to send in another copy. Just consider this one as complete. If for some reason you decide to keep it, just make an edit to the CRZ file name. Delete the " _beta" from the file name. Southern Oaks Expanded_beta.CRZ (delete the part I colored red).
