Win 11/ APCD work around

Post by braden1308 »

I was needless to say that I was not happy watching the US Open and knowing I have a 60-70% completed version on my computer. So I decided to open the APCD back up and try to be as patient as possible with the old girl. It turns out I had uninstalled my CD version but still had one of Danny D's apps in my APCD folder.

Well Danny's version has been working seamlessly so far, I have found it is not very compatible with the mod but the base version is working fine. I have gotten to seam blending the course and so far so good.

My basis for this post is that right now it looks like Danny's version, which does not install into your system is the work around Win 11. I am cautiously optimistic right now. so fingers crossed and let's hope this works.

APCD must be one of the most cantankerous pieces of software ever devised.

Mind you some mainframe programs I have used were extremely unforgiving if you made a mistake.

If you do not install it, it suggests it is not using the Windows registry in any way, which for a Microsoft program would be very unusual. I'm being more curious as to its setup more than anything.

I am not sure how Danny created the file or how it works without being installed. I do know that it will not work well with the mod, and there were a couple other minor things but I don't recall what they were. I'm sure I"ll come across them at some point.

Glenn,
Are you referring to the file "APCD with 2001 Planting Set" that Danny uploaded?
I have used this with Windows 10 and 11 for the last 4 years or so and I have never had a problem that I would associate with Windows
I have had many, many problems while working with APCD, but I believe they were the standard glitches that are inherent in APCD.

I am very pleased that, life permitting, you have the opportunity to complete Oakmont.
Good luck,
:cheers1:

Thank Ian, I have always worked from a CD install with the APCD, it was quite by accident that I am using Danny’s version. Fate maybe, I don’t know but so far so good!

A prebuilt installation, that is interesting.

Im pretty sure Dan's version of APCD is the result of APCD at one point in time being installed properly, then copy-pasting the whole file directory from the APCD folder to a new location/computer. I have done it that way too, originally I had it installed, but not installing it seems to work fine so I never install it nowadays, copying a separate APCD folder for each different course I begin working on.

If I recall correctly, I got the mod to work without APCD installation on Win 7 or Win 10 - havent tried the mod on Win 11, At least the cloning worked, the custom texture properties wouldnt stick, which I thought was an inherent flaw of the mod but it is possible it had something to do with the lack of installation.
Finished Courses - Main: Amedal (fictional), Nine Bridges (real)
Other: Austin, Sheshan, Kauri Cliffs, Le Golf Nat. Updates: Whirlpool, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's, Chicago, Chambers Bay, Munchen Nord E
Working on: 2 fictional courses + a couple things...

The only "mod" I can recall was V 1.06 which changed the ball physics and which was rolled into 1.07 as different conditions.

Is this what you are referring to, or is it something different.
