Upgrading from W10 to W11

Post by Ian Wells »

I have just upgraded my laptop from W10 to W11 because I thought it may solve a problem I had, - it didn't.

With W10, Links worked perfectly using the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, but after upgrading Links would only select the Intel UHD Graphics and as a result I had no sky. I have spent 2-3 hours trying to correct it based on what information I could gather from this forum and the internet. I uploaded Links again and ran the patches but there was no difference. I configured the Nvidia Control panel to use Nvidia for Links, but again there was no difference.
I admitted defeat and downloaded the Didgeridoo application that Andy set up, and the skies are showing as normal, (but no translucent shadows).
Knowing what I now know I wouldn't have upgraded to W11. I have Links on my all-in-one computer running W11, but this only has 512MB ATI AMD Radeon Graphics. No UHD Graphics chip.

As I only run Links to check my courses as I build them, and that is normally on the all-in-one, not having translucent shadows is not a problem, but I just thought this information may be useful for other members.

Hello Linksters, I recently upgraded from Links 10 (not reinstall) to windows 11. So far I have had 0 issues or problems running Links 03, did not have
reinstall links. Graphics look as good as they did with windows 10. Am using a NVidia 2060 6gb & amd 5600G cpu on a desktop unit. I did utilize the Nvidia inspector to set up the graphics for links.

I've been using Links on XP, Win 7, Win 10, and now trying to get it to work in Win 11. I installed it as usual and ran it fine, created a player and took a few swings before updating it to 1.07. That seemed to work fine however I was still very limited in resolutions I could use, so I double clicked the nVidia patch from my Downloads folder (instead of moving it to my Links folder). That was the last time I was able to launch Links. The new pc is high end gaming machine which I bought for the new Flight Simulator, but after an afternoon of uninstalling/reinstalling and deleting all registry references to "Links 2003" and "nvidia_win7" I finally gave up. Nothing worked. A black window appears and a blue circle rotates when the cursor is in that window, but it never renders. I have to kill it with Task Manager. I even unplugged USB devices, but that didn't help. My guess is that executing the nVidia "fix" outside of the Links folder is what did me in. Any words of wisdom?

Try setting a certain resolution mode with the registry before launching Links, also try Compatibility settings (right click LinksLauncher and/or LinksMMIII, choose Properties, Compatibility tab), run for Win 7, and Override high DPI scaling or whatever that setting is called in Win 11. Try running as Admin. Try launching from both LinksLauncher and LinksMMIII.
Finished Courses - Main: Amedal (fictional), Nine Bridges (real)
Other: Austin, Sheshan, Kauri Cliffs, Le Golf Nat. Updates: Whirlpool, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's, Chicago, Chambers Bay, Munchen Nord E
Working on: 2 fictional courses + a couple things...
