Lidar version of Shinnecock Hills

Post by linkster »

Just so everyone is aware I did a lidar version of Shinnecock Hills for this year's US Open. It is far from the eye candy of Rob Miller's version but you will find this to play much tougher and closer to real conditions.

I didn't have time for the clubhouse or custom 3D tees. I also didn't get to integrate the road running through the course. Aside from the items that make the course feel complete, the course is fully done with textures, planting, and seam blends.

The fringe areas of the course play as fairway but roll with a stimp of 10. This will make the ball run away from the greens as in real life. It also allows for putter to be played from off the green.

Don't be fooled into thinking the course is simple as the overhead views suggest. The greens only play to about half the actual size. Add in slopes and you need to be in specific areas to putt toward the hole. Any shot from the rough, or worse the grass, is a punch out lay up. Add in the wind and this course will quickly take a bite out of your score.

Enjoy the week of the US Open. Let me know if you see any issues with the course that need to be addressed.

I've played nine so far. For the amount of time that you had, I think you did great! I'm looking forward to checking out a lot of green speeds, and thanks a lot for your work on putting from off the green.

I played 18 holes with Windy conditions and at FC/MC settings.

It certainly is not an easy course, and yes I did run through a lot of greens, even when landing in front of the green. I was not going to break par at those settings, it was +5 round.
