Links 2003 and Antialiasing

Post by Mailman »

I experimented again this morning with the image quality that I am seeing on Links 2003 (when it runs that is  ) on Windows 11.

This morning saw the same pattern of irregular starts but at least it was starting within a few minutes (best number of restarts was 4, I think - worst time to start maybe 3-5 mins maybe as many as 15 restarts).

Armed with the latest Nvidia driver I am trying 576.52 WHQL I gingerly applied FXAA (in addition to Anisotropic Filtering x16) on my PC expecting Links to fall over and/or not load (eventually). I tested my long-time test holes (Tall Pines Estate H#3) and (Wyntoon H#1). Both holes saw FXAA being applied - bunkers being less jagged and stone edging at front of tee at TPE without any jaggies. I took screenshots before and after and it was obviously clear that FXAA was being applied. No artifacts, all menus present and no funny chequerboard edging around the topcam. However when I went back into the Nvidia control panel and tried to push it by changing the Antialiasing - Mode setting to 'Override any application setting' and restarted (after the usual) then I started seeing artifacts/missing menus etc.

I do see a slight blurring of the overall image compared to just using Anisotropic filtering but at least FXAA does appear to work for my card via the Nvidia control panel program settings for Links MMIII. So there is a trade-off with applying FXAA (as there probably was back in the days).
