Discussion with dwg

Post by dko »

Des, to continue our discussion from the other thread, my RAM is 8gb and I have used 158gb of 238gb available. The computer is about 4 years old.

Doug,

With those specs if you have no other applications open you would not be expected to have any memory induced problems.

There is more than sufficient free storage space as well.

On any system Links will crash on occasions, but mostly you should be able to resume. I see that on both of my Windows systems at times

If you continue to have problems and are using dgVoodoo, I would suggest you try DDrawCompat.

My own experience is this wrapper has less problems than dgVoodoo and in fact also removes some of the restrictions of dgVoodoo i.e. it is more reliable. The later versions of dgVoodoo have significant problems with Links, I did take it up with the developer but he only has the demo version of Links with 9 holes of skeleton coast and the problems are really only evident on 2003T courses.

It is not hard to swap wrappers, I do have dgVoodoo saved in its own folder if there is something I want to test with this wrapper.

Des, I'm afraid I'm one of those old farts who goes by the adage that if it ain't broke (too badly) don't fix it. The Interruptions I was experiencing were minor annoyances with no real consequences, and after all the trouble I went through to get Links working on Windows 11, I figure I'll leave well enough alone until I can't anymore.

Plus, I've only had one hiccup in my last 7 rounds. :fcrossed:

But I do sincerely appreciate your efforts to help.

I am willing to try things, well I did get Links working on Linux, so that shows how far I will go :) I'm also of the nothing ventured nothing gained school, but I do take precautions.

What I did was with my working dgVoodoo setup was I moved the dgVoodoo specific files to a folder of their own - so I could just copy them back, it's a standing practice as I have been testing multiple wrappers over time. I then installed the DDrawCompat wrapper and tested it, safely in the knowledge I could easily reinstate dgVoodoo in need. I have had to do that many times as I have tested multiple wrappers.

Since then I also have a copy of the installed DDrawCompat in its own folder too, so I can swap at will, try newer wrappers etc and be able to easily get back to where I was with either wrapper.

What I am saying is if you want to try something new there is a safe way to do it, that enables you to go back to where you were.
