Wynyard Woods

Post by Ian Wells »

I have aske Andy to upload the beat version of Wynyard Woods.

Wynyard Woods is a fictional course with the black tees stretching 7311 yards.

The hole handicaps have been decided by the result of three computer players competing 18 holes. If anyone has an interest in making a more scientific handicap rating I will amend the ratings for the final version. The hole previews will be added for the final issue.

I hope you enjoy playing this APCD rendition of the course.
Please add all comments to this post and thank you for your time.

Hi, Ian,

I'm a relative newcomer to Links 2003, having joined this past summer, and have been enjoying all that the game offers, including a lot of great courses. I recognize your name as one of the most prominent course designers in the Links community. This latest, Wynyard Woods, looks great. Thanks for all your efforts.

I gather that the course database isn't accessible right now on the usual site. Is there an alternate place to download courses? When I click on Courses on the Links Corner Forum page, I get an error message saying I don't have permission to access the site.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ian,

You've created something really great again.
I've played the course twice and haven't noticed any inconsistencies.

Thanks for that,
Titus

Ian,

Played the course once so far, This is on Linux and it played well, the real test these days seems to be on my Windows Notebook, my observations on this one round:
  • The course strikes me as one that you could find in real life so very realistic
  • It is not a course to play driver at every long hole, it requires thought on club selection off the tee
  • One tee encouraged me to play a little draw shot, worked well, although you can play a standard shot too so there were choices.
  • There is a premium put on Club selection and distance control.
  • The course can demand good shot placement for the best results
  • It is the sort of course you need to play multiple rounds on to determine the best strategy and course management
A lot of thought has gone into the course and it shows, it looks good and in my round I did not see any problems.

I'll have a look later today on my "problem" machine.

It plays Well on my Windows notebook, and thanks to it higher resolution it also looks better.

FWIW the problem on this machine is due to interaction between Intel video and dgvoodoo wrapper, some courses do not get on well with it.

Dave in Canada (Leafsfan), Titus and Dwg,

Thank you for your positive comments and the time you gave to provide them.
This is the first fictional course I have built since Sweetlake in 2009 and reminded me of how much more difficult it used to be before we were treated to the downloads provided by Linkster.
With the problems that this site has endured over the last few weeks I will wait a few weeks before updating to final.
Thank you all again.

Nice work man! Really gorgeous. Will download and check it out.

Always something special that an undulating cart path seems to bring to a scene like that isn't there? Maybe it just shows the amount of elevation detail that each course has. Extra impressive for an hand-built fictional course. Its not easy to make the elevation changes look natural.

How do you do your paths Ian?
Completed: Golf Club of Houston (Redstone); Banff Springs 2025 (Thompson 18 and Tunnel Mountain); Mauna Kea 2024; Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Working on another Sydney course with an eye across the ditch too.

Hi Colin,
It's good to hear from you again.
Extra impressive for an hand-built fictional course
After enjoying working with the downloads that Linkster provides, I had forgotten just how much work it takes to build a course from scratch. I can only applaud all the designers who, over the many years, built real courses pre-Linkster downloads.
[How do you do your paths Ian?
It depends how I was feeling at the time  :ill: :cheers1:
Presently I use "River/Cart-path" option and then adjust the shape to make sure there are no handles that overlap, by adding control points between the handles. Insert the shape, select verts that are interior to the shape and nondestructive delete. Then tidy it up, which, normally, is not so difficult.

I understand your frustrations and often share them. So long as I enjoy the process of building the course I will continue, irrespective of anyone downloading and playing it. The lack of feedback is exceptionally frustrating. If a designer spends hundreds of hours building the course, it shouldn't be too much to ask a person who downloads the course to spend 10 minutes giving feedback, even if it is "This course is terrible because ....."

Whinge over

With any software you get many more people use it than comment. I am involved in another forum and take part in beta testing of the program and also answering questions on its use, it is a personal finance program, but the number of people involved like that are a mere handful. It is a struggle to get people involved in testing.
