LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Background: This is the third version of this course released to Links Corner by Mr. Selberg. I believe that Selto Beach was the first course done by Mr. Selberg. If you have downloaded and played all three, you will no doubt notice the vast improvement in Mr. Selberg's skills. You may be familiar with Mr. Selberg from another one of his courses at LC by the name of Royal Thoroughfare. RT is a fantastic golf course; liked by many. He also has two other beta versions available at LC. The second version of Selto Beach was released and reviewed way back in October of last year. That version, while intriguing, had lots of small errors. I am expecting that Mr. Selberg has greatly improved this version and am looking forward to trying it out.

Overall Impression: Wow, this course just leaves you breathless. It is spectacular to look at and quite a bit of fun to play. This course is set in a lush tropical environment. It is one of the most interesting visual APCD courses I have ever seen. There is so much to look at it is hard to describe. There is a lot to listen to as well. From the first tee on, you are serenaded with music, birds, oceans and waterfalls. The planting here is some of the best I have ever seen. The water hazards are absolutely gorgeous! I can see why it took Mr. Selberg so long to finish the 'final' version of this course. There isn't a straight line on the course. The fairways, bunkers, lakes, rock outcroppings, etc. are all elaborately curved and snaking. This adds to the effect. There are some playability issues here, but nothing serious.

Playability: This is the one part of the course I have a small problem with. This will be a pretty tough course for the champ level player. There are some tiny greens, some narrow fairways, punishing rough/jungle areas and a few greens with severe slopes. It is a blast to play for the pro level player, but could be a real bitch for the champ player.

Shot Values: This is a fascinating study in not losing you ball. In real life, you and I would probably lose a few dozen or so. You rarely get a flat lie, the greens and hazards are pretty tough and there are lots of rocks and rocky hills to avoid. There are a few strange holes though. The twelfth and thirteenth holes are both very reachable par 4's. They are 261 and 236 yards respectively. Although the greens are pretty small and they are not complete pushovers, they are both easily reachable. I really think that the thirteenth hole (especially) should be classified as a par 3. This course is also a par 70. There is only two par fives; which is kind of disappointing to me. I love the risk-reward type of decisions on those holes and missed having an extra one or two. Despite these things; this course really tests your game. You need to plan every shot carefully. There are some holes which require a forced lay up off the tee. Some of the holes can visually trick you into aiming the wrong way; and some are just really tough.

Visuals: As stated above this course is the most visually stunning golf course I have ever seen. It is gorgeous! From the first tee on, where you hit your tee shot over the ocean and beach, you are amazed when you get to each new hole. This makes the course very fun to play, because you can't wait to see what comes next. The one visual thing I could quibble about would be the use of two colors of bunker sand. It is my preference to keep a consistent bunker color throughout the course.

Technique: Mr. Selberg has come a long way with his technical skills and they are displayed in full here. There are one or two small errors, but nothing you would ever notice unless you are familiar with the APCD. I won't even bother mentioning them.

Summary: A visually stunning golf course; which is very fun to play for the pro level player. It may be too difficult for champ level players; but definitely worth a look if you don't mind the download size. It is a huge file though; so check out those photo's carefully. For fast connection guys, I would recommend it heartily. Slow guys may not want to spend all those hours; unless those pictures really catch your eye.

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
