LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner (loner)

This is a very attractive desert course not done in the style of a Big Horn but almost a park set in the desert, which doesn't seem to detract from it in any way. The tee boxes, roughs, (mowed) fairways, and greens are well matched as is the very nicely done tree planting throughout the course. The tee boxes were most attractively planted much to our enjoyment but unfortunately not to the pleasure of a groundskeeper who must tend to this heavily traveled area, tees are very seldom seen like this at real golf courses. I wasn't particularly thrilled with the 'khaki' color of the 'cvt' desert.

I found a number of 'blind' or nearly 'blind' spots on this course, but they didn't seem to pose a problem. It's quite a straightforward course; I didn't see any hidden faults, hazards or tricks with these 'blind' shots.

The elevation seemed to be well thought out and inventive at times which could make for an interesting round. The caddie at times seemed to give me strange club choices but they were usually accurate.

The bunkers on the fairways were placed in strategic places but never posed a problem. The greens however were mostly well guarded but with minimal care you can avoid them. The few water hazards never came into play. The generous fairways kept you out of the bunkers and the greens at times were easy, hard brakes, or were sloped, quite a variety, but in the end I wound up with more birdies and less putts than I thought I would.

2nd hole, par 3, 163y with a 8.2 rise, If you use the 7 iron the caddie gives to you it will put you in the front bunker because of the rise, I adjusted my trajectory to give me a longer drive and landed 12 ft past the cup.

12th hole, par 5, 555y, actually 492y with a 21y rise, Try to put your drive well to the right of the bunker, mine because of the rise in elevation landed and gave me 266y with a 45.2' rise for a second shot. You can't reach the green even with an overshot , your best bet is to aim for the center of the right bunker, with a normal 3w I landed in the center of the fairway, 44y from the flag affording me a definite birdie opportunity.

16th hole, par 4, 458y with a 17'3ft rise on this hole the fairway is cut in half by a large water hazard that cannot be cleared with your driver, to use a driver to get to the edge of the hazard you will find it puts you into the rough at the edge of the water, or worse. I found the only sensible way was to use my 3w which left me with 219y to the pin, a very acceptable and safe alternative to the driver. I used a 2 iron with an adjustment for loft to clear the trees in front of the green.

This besides being a nice looking course it was a pleasant course to play. It played under my ideal conditions very well and I can see the bunkers in the fairways that didn't bother me now prove to be a challenge with wind and the well guarded greens, which I was able to safely hit and stay on before, become difficult if they were played fast. With the minor exception of the color of the desert and the lack of a cameo and splash this is a very acceptable download, I enjoyed my brief stay here and will keep it on my hard drive, try it I believe you will enjoy it.
