LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

November 2002

The tee box was a course texture; the fairways were mowed in an interesting pattern with a well-blended first cut leading into a deep rough that looked plush while still keeping with the color scheme of the rest of the field. The green was checkerboard with a wide fringe. While I'm calling the course a woodland one it should be called woodland-coastal-ocean-desert, sounds confusing but the front nine was a woodland course and the back nine was still woodlands with a beautiful assortment of trees lining the fairways but there were desert patches and a coastal or ocean scene in the background. Sounds confusing and unattractive but just the opposite, it looked and worked out quite well. He used a mixture of hazards, bunkers, desert patches, bodies of water with a nice trim and patches of rough. The fairways were better than medium in size but the hazards were to be dealt with; they were very well placed, as were the bunkers that guarded the medium greens. The greens were relatively flat with gentle breaks when you were up close but your short game better be in order because they undulated, sloped and had tiers that would cause problems if you didn't get a good landing by the cup. The wood or rock trim around some of the holes, #5, #6, #7, #15, #18 (did I miss any?) wasn't very attractive or functional. He has sand buckets next to each tee box to fill in the divots that he left there, the buckets were a nice touch but the divots aren't that novel after a few holes.

Elevations and hole shapes were a major part of this course. It was interesting to play this long course that was shortened by the elevations while trying to avoid the hazards. The pin placement (easy) that I had on the # 5 hole seemed to be in a very awkward spot, every time I would land on the green, weather it be the back or the front I would roll down the green, the fairway and into the bunker. A little to sloped for my tastes, bad beta testing, if any. A fascinating hole was # 17, par 5, 564y it was a reverse 'C' shape with water between the tee box and the green. You could take the conventional approach and follow the fairway or go for an island sitting the 'bay'. I went for the island, 287y, and then only had 118y left to the pin. You have to get a birdie, an eagle is almost impossible to avoid, an albatross possibly?

This is his second course and a good design it is. It's a nice looking course even with the odd changes in scenery half way through. The hazards are definitely hazards and aren't there for decoration. The hole shapes are very imaginative and the course is well made, he did a wonderful job on the many bunkers. It a challenging course even under easy conditions and many times it's a 'fun' course when you're trying to figure out the best approach to the greens. As I said before the putting can be easy or difficult depending on your distance from the cup. This is a course that you should download; you'll enjoy it in spite of its 2003 size.

Description
Fictional, lakeside course.

Concept  4/10
Liberty South is another lagoon course, but it's strangely lacking in ingenuity or impact on the memory. While it's laid out competently enough, and features some interesting designs, there is something of a schoolboy error in making the gimmicky second half a lot easier than the first. Addtionally, the rockworks that litter the course smack of overkill: the whole thing just isn't convincing as an ocean-side course.
Appearance  3/10
Extruded bunkers, smooth-moulded rocks and nothing convincing by way of the coastline; all these add up to form an uninspiring impression. I have to say that the lush greens and texture transitions aren't quite up to scratch either, and the planting seems to be somewhat random. There's very little to grab the attention.
Playability  4/10
With so many trans-water target holes, you'd think this course would be a joy to play. It's surprisingly soulless, though; the holes seem overworked and unmemorable. Worst of all is the green complexes: needlessly overbunkered, way too hard, and punishment for the golfer. Hard work rather than good fun.
Challenge  6/10
Many Mod players will delete this course on encountering some of the outrageous green gradients and pin positions. Many target areas are pushed up tight to water or sand, although some generous fairways help to break up the difficulty. It's unlikely you'll score many - if any - single putts, though, and birdies will be limited.
Technical  5/10
It's clear that the designer has aspired to much, and to be fair the construction of the course is pretty much without glaring faults. Sadly, it's all a bit sterile and unconvincing. Certain gimmicks, like the divots on tees and the sculpted rocks, become wearisome. The course hasn't dated well, and it's not as old as some.
Overall Shrug your shoulders and say 'so what'. There's nothing here that will knock you out. 22/50
