LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
September 2002
As of the writing of this review this course has only 3 stars and 6 user ratings, a shame for a nice course such as this. I reviewed his first course and this is a vast improvement over that one. As far as looks and playability they aren't even in the same league. He started with a patterned tee box, mowed fairways with a fringe, patterned greens with a fringe and a graduated rough usually running blended into a maintenance road. A most attractive setup, this was enhanced by a variety of pine trees that were either densely planted and need no undergrowth to trees in a reddish mixture he called 'pine straw'. At an overwhelming number of tee areas he 'dressed' it up with either rock flower gardens or buttercup and brush areas, which were equally attractive. His bunkers, which were done very well had a gritty brown sand in them that fit the course beautifully and some had small bushes and an occasional tree, very nice indeed. The water hazards were framed with brush and buttercups with water lilies on the surface. I liked the small touch of the divot marks on the 3 pars. You could almost say that it looked, not played, in an imaginary way but it was definitely a fictional course.
He started this course with a well thought out risk/reward draw shot hole and finished with a long well guarded 5 par one, a nice beginning and a nice finish. His elevations varied and the caddie seemed up to it. The fairways were ample in size but the were heavily guarded both on the sides and dotting the center by bunkers, water hazards and at times a tree or two. The greens were irregular in shape and they too were well guarded, this is not an easy course like his first was. The fairways can be navigated, he saw to that, and the greens, well if you were in close to the pin the putts had slight breaks, but if you strayed to far from the flag area when you landed you found that the greens either undulated, were tiered or had slopes to them. Some of the slopes were a little too much for the pin placement, something he has to work on. With all of the draws and fades this was an enjoyable change from the courses that we are used to. The hole shapes were very imaginative and most were challenging.
This is a very nice course; it looks like he knows how to use the APCD and is careful not to have sharp edges or dark areas. It's a huge change from his first course so please don't judge this one by his first. The game is challenging under the easy conditions that I test under and would be a bear of a course to play under harsh conditions. All of this and more packed into a small download of only 15.9mb, a bargain at twice the size. My feelings are that this is a worthwhile download and that you will have a most enjoyable time here.

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
