If I step away from the computer in the middle of a round, will it time out OR will it wait for me to come back? Can I save a round and finish it later? Or if I start a round do I need to plan time to finish it.

You can play online with post-shot updates to your leaderboard, or offline. I play offline, and with it I can stop and come back minutes or hours later and resume the round. During that waiting period I can't use Links for playing some other round, of course. There's supposed to be a 30 minute wait limit, but if you don't use Links for anything else you can wait longer.

A found where you can check online or offline? How would the round be uploaded after completion?

When playing offline, at the completion of your round (after your last putt has gone in and you have clicked the continue button) you have to wait a few seconds until you get a message that "your statistics have been sent in".
