Links courses that you have played

Post by adanac67 »

A number of years ago I stumbled upon that my home course had been recreated in Links. Grey Silo for those that want to check it out. It is a fairly accurate representation of it, just a few elevation changes that are slightly off.

Today I got thinking how courses have I played that have been re-created in Links? So in my boredom today I went through the list of real courses and marked them down. There were a number of ones that I had played that I didn't even know had been re-cretaed so later tonight I will be trying those out.

Anyways in all I have played 22 courses that have been recreated in links. I think it is so cool to be able to replay once in a life time courses again and again. It's one of my favorite things about links.

Wondering how many you all have played? Would be interesting to see how many we can check off as a group.

Hi adanac, I\ve played a few Links courses in real life too. Not as many as you though! I've played the Links at Crowbush in PEI and Highland Links in Cape Breton (it's Ingonish in Links, named for the nearby town. I've also played almost every hole on Ottawa's Great 18 in real life (older 2001 with a mix of holes from around Ottawa, Canada where I live), Stonebridge (also Ottawa) and Whirlpool (Niagara). Finally, I've played the St Andrews Jubilee Course, back in 2012.

In June of 1994, after having completed my service with the Coast Guard, I was heading home to Wisconsin from Seattle, and I took a detour to the Salt Lake City area and went up the side of the hill to play the course that started it all, Bountiful Ridge. The views were amazing, it was $14 to play 18 and I think I shot an 88 (I'm a mid-eighties golfer). I think I was a little starstruck, I couldn't believe that I was actually on this course. I played with three great guys and it was an experience of a lifetime!

Torrey Pines in 1994. I was hideous. Mauna Kea, holes 3 and 4 in 2015. Bogey and Double Bogey. Hole 3 tee shot was great, but I 3 putted.

I guess it's time to humblebrag that I have played Pine Valley (played atrociously), Merion (shot a sweet 79), and Bethpage Black (a mess of a round). Also played Troon North - Monument (in a scramble); would have to check on others, but I'm very thankful to have played those four!

I've done a lot of driving around North America over the years and, while I'm no longer able to play the game (other than here) I've been lucky enough to visit many of the courses. My wife hasn't been thrilled,, especially since I bought a shirt at each club.
One thing I discovered-if you want to visit an exclusive private club make sure you phone ahead and be respectful-you can generally at least get into the pro shop. There was only one club at which we felt somewhat less than welcome even though we had called ahead.
Starting in Canada:
St. George's-I curled there in my younger years and followed a Canadian Open...the clubhouse is a magnificent castle.
Glen Abbey-again to see a Canadian Open. I hope we get to see another one there.
Whirlpool-just visiting
Hamilton-just visiting
Banff-we were driving across Canada and simply had to stop. There are horse trails running around the grounds-better stay in the short stuff. The Banff Springs Hotel is magnificent
I regret not visiting Lake Louisa as well.

Now the US:
Oak Hill-my doctor in Toronto was an avid golfer and his club in Toronto has a reciprocal agreement. He was invited to be a course marshall for the 2001 PGA-he got me a pass for the practice round
Medinah
Cog Hill-they were exceptionally nice!
Sawgrass
Doral
Pinehurst
Pebble Beach-you have to pay a toll to get into the neighbourhood-seriously
We were there on the Monday of the 2009 Pebble Beach Tournament. That was the year of the 4th round rainout. They were hoping to play the 4th round on Monday but
we had lunch overlooking the 18th green and watching them try to squeegee the fairway.
We also visited Spyglass Hill and Cyprus Point
We"ve visited Riviera twice...in 2009. They wouldn't let us into the clubhouse but escorted us around to the pro shop which is directly behind the first tee.. we also attended an LA Open. The spectator entrance is on the left side of the first fairway...hopefully beyond the range of the pros.
Last but not least Torrey Pines
As I said, of all those courses we visited there was only one where we weren't welcomed as visitors. I won't say which one.
So I have a closet full of golf shirts and a folder of scorecards (II picked up corecards too)..and from courses other than Links. (like Brickyard Crossing). I you ever go the Indy 500 wear earplugs-the sound is seriously painful...and the place is seriously HUGE
Sso like U said-phone ahead, be respectful, arrange a time (preferably not in a peak period ) and who knows?
