I have played a couple of rounds on Colonial.

I played at mc/mc and the greens were fairly reasonable, although you can leave yourself some hairy putts still.

The problems seem to be between tee and green. The width of the fairways didn't give me any major problems but the dog legs did.

I note that the preview says shaping the ball is needed on some holes.

In RTS it does not give you the capability to change swing plane or open and closed club face, but a user has worked out a way to get a stock fade and draw by changing the setup on two predefined shots (Flop and Punch) I have done this so can get a fixed amount of movement, still from tee to green is still difficult.

I think this week my personal goal will be to try and keep it around par and if I can pick up a shot here and there good. In my rounds so far I found it very easy to drop shots and hit quite a few trees and branches. Also been moving the ball around on the tee to try and eek the most out of the angles.

I can see a real scrambling week coming up.

Thomas,

Thank you for setting up this little tour that we've been doing, it has been very fun playing Links again as I hadn't played it very much the past 3 to 4 years. I started the season frustrated at my early results when I stopped using the challenging settings, after that change I've fared so much better since that change, it is fun to watch the tournaments after playing the same conditions and pin placements and seeing the pros hit into spots where I had been at in my round.

Jim

PS-I haven't played a practice round at Colonial yet, but if I remember correctly I think it might have some 'steel' trees on it but I could be wrong.

I second Jim's comments Thomas and will miss this when the season ends.

I've seen the term "steel trees" many times in the forum but have never been clear on what they are. I assumed they were hidden obstacles that the ball bounced off of unexpectedly. Is that accurate?

the term "steel trees" is refering to the trees in general that most ,if not all are 3D not 2D. Treat all trees as if they were 3D.
P.S. Tee markers are 3D too(I found out last year hehe)

Yes, Doug the 'steel trees' that I referred to would ricochet the ball either back into the fairway or further into trouble (and would not go through them) if my memory serves. It might have been the first version of Colonial that had that but I can't remember for certain.

Went out for a practice round on Colonial and got a taste of the trees on the first hole. Gotta admit this course will keep you on your toes. Looking forward for the start. https://youtu.be/T1Ri5xYJnVg
