Rocky cliffs and stone textures

Post by Colin Jones »

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a great Xmas and are looking forward to an even-better 2026!

A feature of the current course I am working on is its rocky cliffs and outcrops looking over the Pacific Ocean. These are vast areas and are intrinsic to the course.

Simply, I need to nail it and I am currently experimenting with a lot of different textures and mappings. As you might know, Links doesn't always present stone/rock textures well - particularly when done on a large scale. So it is proving a real challenge.

Does anyone know of courses I can check out where you can recall these type of rocky textures being done really well?
Or, for our few remaining or retired designers () , any techniques that you've used when working with these type of textures (particularly when rotated)?

Working on another Sydney course with an eye across the ditch too.

Colin,
I can't help with which courses have used rock textures well as I only play Links when testing my courses.

I have always struggled with rock faces. On The Golf Club at Black Rock and Gozzer Ranch I spent hours trying to get it right and failed badly. The only thing that helped me was to add lots of vertices by splitting the internal edges, and then just playing with them. I selected a number of them and . rotated them in differing planes and sharpening some edges. Very hit and miss I'm afraid. Unfortunately doing this usually means having multiple mappings in a single texture.

Good luck.

Nice work Sage. Do you still have copies of the rock textures from Cypress Point?

Hi Colin,
Here is the texture. You can probably modify color and such in the paint program you use.

Here are the specs on the planer

Scale 100

No other mods but I suppose you will want to rotate being a cliff vertical situation.
