Links timeout

When I am playing my wife, her on her computer and me on mine. Direct mode. She very often links gives a time out error. This pop up dialog can not be cleared, have to alt-tab and back to refresh.
Is this a network problem. We both play the software downloaded from her. I do not get the time outs, just on her PC.
