It is rather weird.

On a Windows machine I have Solitude as the active script.

Move the sound slider and keep holding the mouse button down and I can hear the sounds, release the mouse button and it goes silent.

FWIW I have found a sound script that provides environmental background sounds across all of my systems reliably, i.e. multiple Windows 11 & Linux systems

It is called Natural Wall of Sound has birds, insects, some gently running water, even the occasional light plane so far.
