long time player a long time ago

Ok, I started playing this silly game when you had to WAIT for a new course to come out from Access software.
Back then I think it was called Links 386

So, anyway, I'm watching the tourney of champions this past weekend and when I saw the 17th and 18th holes of Kapalua Plantation I instantly envisioned it in my head on the simulation. So, this morning, I dug through some boxes and found my Microsoft Links 2001.

I think I tried installing it a few years back and it wouldn't install. But I figured what the heck.

It seem to install properly, just the way I remember.

However when I went to launch it, it asked for disk 1, which it did way back when. I then got an error message that it could not verify the disk.

I then went looking for Links 2003 to purchase. I found a demo version and installed it and went to launch it and my screen went bonkers. The only way I could stop it was Ctrl-Alt-Del. I did notice that the demo version was only 32 bit and I'm on a 64 bit machine.

So, I see where this site sells the game. It also sells the course packs.

Somewhere in my boxes I have DVD's of courses I downloaded way back when. I'm sure it was close to 1000 courses.

So, here comes my questions. If I can locate those courses, will the still play on Links 2001 or 2003?

Why am I getting the cannot very disk error?

Thank You

I followed the topic link.

The only thing I saw in there that might apply to my situation was that instead of using Linkslauncher was to try LinksMMI app. I also saw that I need to replace the RuKsHuk file. The place I was taken to requires a Drop Box acct. Am I on the right path?

To make life easier in the future I have replaced the Drop Box link with a link to a download here.

Also make sure to install the patches at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10 , the way your screen goes crazy when launching sounds like something that maybe would happen without the nvidia patch, if it still does it afterward installing the patches, try right clicking LinksLauncher.exe or LinksMMI.exe > properties and try some different compatibility settings.

You should not need a dropbox account to download the RuKsHuK.exe (edit: maybe you did before Andy's fix, I suppose). It solves the part where the game asks for CD 1, and if you havent gotten that error yet for Links 2003 specifically, you can wait until/if you do.

If you find your old courses they will work, but they may be in different formats (.CRX or .CRZ for example), and only .CRZ will work with Links 2003. However, you can use the course converter to convert some of the older formats, I've never done it so I dont know much about it except that you can find some info here https://www.linkscountryclub.com/links-course-converter . There are TONS of free courses here on Links Corner though, most of which are vast improvements (at least visually, but in many other ways as well) over converted old courses from the older games.

I attempted to install the first patch and I came up with an error: Patch Warning: Missing or Invalid Registry/Ini entry.

Would purchasing Links 2003 from this site get rid of all of these installation problems? If so, I will go that route.

IMO, yes it would. It installed easily for me, and for those who I recommended it to.

I bought and installed Links 2003 and it works fine. However, it is going full screen with no option to drop it down to a window. It is also displaying at 800*600 and it wont let me change that.

My computer has onboard video. AMD Radeon 2MB Vega 8 Graphics. Ver 19.20.

There is a place where I can create user defined graphic settings but I don't want to screw the rest of my computer settings up.

The swing meter doesn't fully display all the time. Plus I cant get the over head view to show. Even though after the shot has been executed I can see the ball flight on the right side of the screen.

Oh oops I guess I somehow didnt register that you were still using the demo, sorry... Well, now that you arent, make sure you got the patches because the Nvidia one often solves issues with graphics settings. If you already have it then Im not sure... possibly you could try the registry edit for display mode (more info at following link, but you have to be careful not to mess up registry edits viewtopic.php?f=4&t=478 ), although I dont think that one would solve the swing meter/top view issues... you might need the solution in this thread instead :dunno: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=788

I second what Adelade said. The nVidia patch is for everyone regardless of whether or not you have a nVidia video card - it gives you widescreen. If in doubt about your video resolution, use your PC's default setting. That should fix your swingmeter problem and your top camera problem. (The 1.07 patch is important, too.)

Fullscreen is all I've ever seen work.

And the second link should solve your onboard video problems. Almost everyone with onboard graphics has to use something like that.

Post your progress, please!
