Links Extender Help Files

Post by SLucey »

Does anyone have the Help Files or Links Extender? I have v2.0 of LE. I understand the Help Files only came with v1, but, I am unable to locate a download for v1.

Hi SLucey...

I've never seen any help files for the Extender. I know that trying to select "HELP" from within the Extender menu results in the Extender shutting down. I've been able to figure out how a lot of the functions work on my own, but when it comes to tinkering with the values of the textures, I'm at a complete loss. I understand that you can make the textures change behavior by tweaking those settings, but can't find any information on their meanings or behavior changes. Can you imagine how time consuming it would be to experiment with how each function effects the textures? You'd have to make a change, save it, re-apply the edited texture to your course, validate and save, and load it into Links and test it with every single tweak you make. Even at that you may not even know what you actually changed. That whole process would take forever. I'd love to have some detailed instructions for it too. If you find anything, please pass it on to the rest of us.

I know that one designer used it to change the properties of sand so the ball would roll back down bunker slopes and not get stuck under steep lips, but the end result was not realistic. The ball would roll around in a bunker like a tennis ball on a skateboard track. It worked, but it sure did look funny watching the ball keep rolling up and down sand traps slopes until it finally settled and stopped at the bottom of the lowest part.

Are there any specific questions that you have about it?

I've asked around for the help file/section a couple times too, never got any reply, let me know if you find it. I think some of the texture changes one could figure out by looking at the category name and differences between a known standard sand/deep rough/rough/fairway/water texture for example.

Have a look at Lez Marwick's video tutorial 62 'Custom terrain properties' in the APCD From Start To Finish series.

He has some suggestions about how to tinker with Links Extender, but he also makes the point that the help function crashes in v2 and only worked in v1
