Michigan Golf Courses on Links

Post by migolfer »

It has been a long layoff from playing MS Links for me (very little to none between the mid-2000's and 2020) but it has been a pleasure returning to it. While browsing through my collection and looking through new releases in the last 15+ years, I am trying to put together a list of the courses available that are based on real (or fictional) courses from the great State of Michigan in the good ol' USA. :) So, here goes, I'm sure there are some that I've missed, if anyone knows of any more please comment in this thread, I would like to add them to my collection.

REAL
FICTIONAL Comments regarding these:
  • The Black Forest course at Wilderness Valley is an early Tom Doak. Sadly, it is now closed. The splash screen on this course says Grayling, MI but it is actually in (S. of) Gaylord.
  • Another Tom Doak golf course in Michigan (his first in the state) that is closed is High Pointe Golf Club.
  • It's a crying shame that either of these wonderful courses had to close. There is one left (quite new): The Loop (at Forest Dunes), a reversible golf course. That one is his best yet, I've played both directions and loved every shot, every view. That would be a good course for someone to create in the APCD...
  • Forest Akers West is an Michigan State University golf course. There is a lot of tournament history there. Us Michiganders are proud to have that golf course in our State.
  • Black Lake is the only Rees Jones designed course in Michigan.
  • Warwick Hills used to host the Buick Open on the PGA Tour.
  • The Manitou Islands are backpacking destinations (my wife and I used to go there a lot). I'm sure the Park Service would be horrified to think that a golf course could be built on either location. :)
  • I am leaving no opinion on the quality of the implementation of any of these.
  • (My avatar photo is me on the first tee of Forest Dunes when we played there a few years back in early May. It's still pretty cold that time of the year here in Northern Michigan. Pretty sure it was between 36F and 40F that morning (2C to 4C). Brr.)

Added a new course to this list - The Legend Golf Course at Shanty Creek (in Bellaire, Michigan): https://linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=270

This is a Links 2001 design released in 2001, so it is quite dated, however, if you're into Michigan golf courses like I am, this is worth the download. This is mostly because The Legend is actually an Arnold Palmer designed golf course I've had the pleasure to play in real life. One of five in the State that he (or his design company, at least) has done, all of which I have played and enjoyed tremendously:
  • Legend at Shanty Creek
  • Manitou Passage Golf Club
  • Ravines Golf Club
  • Coyote Preserve Golf Club
  • Northville Hills Golf Club
If you read the reviews, they make comments that show they have no idea that this is a real course, even though it directly states that in the meta-data ("Type/Style"). This is an example of why I would rather judge most things on my own and usually do not pay much attention to online reviews (Amazon, Yelp, Netflix, etc.)
