Anyone have gameplay/app problems after last windows update?

General question: Links is still running OK, but my old 32 bit Graphic Design programs, that I still was using, to earn a few bucks on the side, were trashed. Windows 10 is asking me to reinstall the programs, but It won't read the disks. Just get an install window that locks up my PC. Sad as 18 years of my Graphic Designs were linked to those programs. Sorry about the bad typing in the Subject, but I could not edit it. Maybe another new Win 10 issue? Other reason for mentioning it is if had to reinstall Links from the original discs it would now be an epic fail. :wallbash:

Desktop. Basically the old Apps installed OK when I bought this PC last September and worked fine until last week. Then after last Win Update they would not open. Just got a Message Window that says I need to put in CD1 (the install program) but when I do that. The window freezes and, in order to do anything else. I have to close the Window via Task Manager. Never had to put in a a CD before to use these Apps. In fact I had to dig them out of storage the other day. My assumption is that last weeks Windows Update included security changes that do not allow use of programs that were originally installed from CD. I also had backups of these CDs as the programs were developed way back when the originals could be copied, but they didn't work either. :wallbash:

There hasn't been anything as such mentioned. Win 10 changes, updates are constantly killing off old software. The errors that the software may throw at you can be completely random and incorrect. It may tell you it needs the CD but the CD may have nothing to do with it.
It may be just a random error that is shown now that the program no longer functions correctly. To rely on an error message, you also have to rely that the program is still compatible and working properly with it's operating system for the error to be potentially accurate.

You could try and change compatibility modes to the program's exe's and also run as admin. Google the programs and see if you can find any further help online from others who may have had the same issue.

I feel for you sir. Its headaches like these that drove me to using swappable drive bays. Install Windows 10 on one drive and use it with normal functioning Window 10 compatible software, and for those important older programs, install Windows 7 on a separate hard drive and swap over to it when you want to use the program. Doing it that way won't allow you to run Win10 and Win7 at the same time, so you can dedicate both operating systems to only run the software it was originally written for.. It really is the simplest solution if you absolutely can't do without that older software.

Good luck,

Dan

Danny,
The only issue with swappable drive bays is you need hardware capable of running on both Win 10 and Win 7. That option is being taken away for anyone buying a PC today.
My Win 10 PC I have to run Win 10 so for any other OS, it has to be another PC.

Win 10 is all about control.

What is it about your new build that won't allow Windows 7 to function on it?

I can't remember all the typical issues but know there was certainly enough that to bother with an old OS on new hardware just isn't worth it or in most cases even possible.
USB's I think were a big issue, certainly on my motherboard. Then of course there are no drivers either for new mobo's. Couple of major issues to try and get around just there.

The other thing people need to think about by using just one PC, you can keep say a Win 7 system, forget the updates, they don't matter but the problem you will have is buying new software and games. More and more games and software only work on Win 10.

Two system set up is really the only way to go forward if you wish to hold on to old software and still have access to new software.
Used components will be available galore for a Win 7 system so should be no issues keeping a Win 7 system going for decades to come.
