The Lido

Post by migolfer »

For golf fans of C.B. Macdonald:

The Lido Golf Club is being remade. See:

https://thelido.com/
https://www.linksmagazine.com/extinct-courses-reborn/

The Lido Golf Club – designed by C.B. Macdonald - opened on long island in 1914. Like all of Macdonald’s routings, The Lido included many classic templates such as the Alps, Redan, and Edan. The Lido was touted by many at the time of its opening to be comparable in shot quality to Pine Valley and National Golf Links - another C.B. Macdonald design. Sadly, the course was demolished by the U.S. Navy after the Navy purchased the property for use as a military base during World War II. Ever since it disappeared, the promise of The Lido has intrigued many as one of the great lost wonders of the golf world. We are excited to announce that The Lido will soon be brought back to life.

The Keiser brothers are building a private club whose mission is to restore and preserve the great masterpiece of C.B. Macdonald. With the help of a private membership, Michael and Chris Keiser will build The Lido on pure sand dunes just north of Sand Valley.
What is it about Long Island that attracts such world-class golf courses?
It's nice that Doak is doing this in Wisconsin, but it will be private. <expletive deleted>

I've read that the Lido will have a private membership, but there will be some public tee times made available to guests of the Sand Valley resort.

Really cool project. A guy named Brian Zager played a key role in converting the digital model of the golf course made in The Golf Club into a format that could be used with the GPS apps for making topo maps and even loaded into GPS-enabled bulldozers. Essentially turns bulldozers into giant 3D printers, because the dozer knows when to raise and lower the blade to get the right elevation at a specific point on the map. Sounds like it's accurate to within an inch. Brian was heavily involved in making courses for the PGA2000 game and is an admin over at their site. And now it's such a promising technology that he's been offered an internship with Tom Doak's design firm. So you never know where making virtual golf courses will lead you!
