Links LS 1998, 1999 and 2000

Post by Still Linksing »

Anyone still playing or wanting to play these?

I see I'm the only one left running a Windows XP computer. I wonder if I'm the only one left playing the old Links games?
If there is any interest and I come up with any additional info on how to run any of these games I'll post. If there is no interest, I won't bother. :dunno:

LS 2000 has some great aspects over Links 2003 imo. For example:

Better cup physics (They are perfect!)
Better swing meter
Proper realisitic shadows
Fuss free tournament mode
No tournament ties. You go to playoff holes against the AI.
More realisitic AI golfers (So others have said. I don't use them)

I love the old LS series. I run it on an older desktop but I would prefer it on my W10 laptop so I can play while watching TV. Sadly we've never figured out W10 compatibility. I don't get sentimental over many games but I wish LS1999 would work, as it was my first Links game. I loved the Arnie and Latrobe and St Andrews videos, the virtual tour of his office etc. To be honest, it's still the best Links out there for me. I can run Links 2001 on my laptop and I enjoy that as it has the last vid captured anis but the AI is nowhere near LS. When the AI in LS would get in trouble they would just get it back into the fairway and not try to hit directly through a forest. Glad there is still love for the old versions!

Oh and one little stupid thing I miss is the spinning Access golf ball as the screen renders.....

There certainly is! I like my games and Links 2000 is my all time fav game of any game.

Guitarzan, you mention you run the old games but can't get Links 99 to work so are you saying 2000 works but 99 doesn't on your old computer?

Yeah, even on XP I can't install it. It must be something to do with the fact that it's a 16 bit installer. I'm sure there are work-arounds but I haven't had the time to look into it. The Links LS that runs for me is LS2000 and I also have the LS Classic disks.

The installer should work, it would only have issues on a 64bit system.

There are a number of problems related to these 3 versions of Links. Here is what I know:

On Win 10, I don't think they will ever run. There are too many separate issues where one fix will not fix all.
Win 7 and Win XP are best options but the graphics card will make all the difference to success. Most old cards work with the games, some don't. Even the cards from back in the early 2000's can have issues. This is rare as most people ran these games fine but there were threads that popped up that I have since worked out the issue was their card. Below is an example, this will be his card causing the issue. Modern day cards are definitely worse for compatibility.

What I have found, unlike Links 2003, Links 98, 99, 2000 all appear to work very well under integrated graphics. You still need a Win XP or Win 7 system but there is no need for a dedicated graphics card. Speed/performance wise these old Links games don't need the power of a dedicated GPU, they fly along on even poor integrated graphics.

If anyone wants to run these games, you really will need a Win XP or Win 7 PC.

I did manage to get LS1999 installed on W10. It's funny, it's a 32 bit program but the installer is 16 bit. It fires up but I get a black screen so it's obvious that my video card or even integrated graphics won't play nice. I'm gonna keep trying different things as I look on this as my personal video game Holy Grail.

You can but on a Win 10 machine I'm quite certain you will be wasting your time.
LS 2000 is basically LS 1999 patched anyhow with a few extra courses and animations. LS 2000 reviews are only good and not great because of the limited new features LS 2000 had over LS 1999. In reality LS 2000 was the finishing touch to make it the pinnacle of the Links LS series.

I don't think I will ever play LS 1999 but Links 1998 I likely will as if nothing else, the interface was very different and it would be a novelty.
