Links working fine on new computer (Win 10)

Post by Adelade »

Always had in mind to give a little report on whether Links would work on my new computer and what was required to get it to work. I set it up today, so here we are.

Relevant specs:
[Links was not a primary consideration for these choices]
OS: Windows 10 Home
CPU: Intel 12100F (does not have integrated graphics) (release date: Jan 2022)
GPU: RTX 2060 6 GB (release date: Jan 2019 (Nvidia model), Jan 2020 (ASUS product))
Motherboard: B660M-A
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2 x 8 GB, 3200 MHz
Windows Display mode: 1680 x 1050 (for now)

Had no unexpected issues, havent played any full rounds yet or so but everything seems to work great when testing.

First installed base game, applied 1.07 patch , applied Nvidia patch, got the Career Mode Fix, applied LSPN main patch, replaced RUKSHUK file. Then I tested if game would work right away - it wouldnt launch to main menu so I changed to compatibility mode for Win 7 then it worked fine. I prefer playing Links in windowed mode and I couldnt find a resolution within the graphical settings that suited my tastes, so I figured I'd need either the dgV Wrapper or else the Registry Edit. Tested and saw that the sky and top cam behaved fine - so I didnt need the wrapper (a first for me). Changed mode to 11 (1400x900) in Registry which worked nicely. Then I transferred all my old personal Links files from old computers and thats it, everything I could think of testing works great. Even translucent shadows work (another first for me). At the moment I dont really feel the need to tweak any Nvidia Control Panel settings, but perhaps ill test out FXAA sometime.
Finished Courses - Main: Amedal (fictional), Nine Bridges (real)
Other: Austin, Sheshan, Kauri Cliffs, Le Golf Nat. Updates: Whirlpool, Royal Lytham, Royal St George's, Chicago, Chambers Bay, Munchen Nord E
Working on: 2 fictional courses + a couple things...

I've seen this remedy a lot over the many years that I've been playing, and I wonder why it's necessary for some and not others.
Probably another mystery of life. :dunno:

Yeah, Ive never needed to do compatibility mode before on two other computers (and I was using the same OS - Win 10 Home on those).

and after your message here today, I did it exactly as you described it (3Std), of course without success.
I'll get a new hard drive on Monday, then I'll install it again from scratch.

Question - the download version of LinksCountryClub can't be installed more than once?

Titus,
Once you have paid for the download you can download it again.
I don’t know if there is a limit, but I have downloaded two times.

:dunno: To me it seems odd if the settings dont transfer to the registry. Maybe something is wrong with the installation process? ...but that doesnt really make sense if you can open the game one time at the start...

Some thoughts:

-Have you tried other settings in the Compatibility tab? Im not sure what theyre called exactly in Windows in German, but Running LinksMMIII as Admin, and some of the other boxes one can tick there?
-I truly understand if you're fed up with trying things, but one thing perhaps - to try install on C: disc instead... It shouldnt normally matter, but who knows...
-You dont happen to have Links CDs to try the CD version instead?
-Perhaps look around for some settings to fiddle with in Nvidia control panel?
-Have you tried with no USB devices connected to the computer when launching the game?

...."old regedit path changed to D:\Links 2003\"....why the heck are you installing it on a "d" drive....it has been explained in detail before...install it to the "c" drive...the root drive.... :fcrossed:
