Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022

The .dem file format that the APCD can import is from the USGS and dates back to the 90's. It is designed to use integer values of meters for elevations and grid coordinates. Early on when I started messing around with importing terrains in APCD I thought the process was not helpful due to the coars...

Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022

Sounds like I better put writing the next LIDAR tutorial higher on my priority list, you are all getting close to figuring out how to get a LIDAR terrain into APCD! :cheers1: A lot of the magic happens in QGIS. I create a point grid to sample the raster LIDAR data to the desired density, same as in ...

Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022

I'm still working on this course, just not with any rush to hit a desired deadline now that The Open has passed. I am actually redoing the course based on a 2m terrain grid from the LIDAR elevations. It doesn't seems like much but going from a 3m grid to a 2m grid actually more than doubles the numb...

Re: LIDAR Tutorial 1 – Creating Green Contours in QGIS

Thanks for the interest everyone! Here is a couple follow-ups to the conversation. The 18th green at Chambers Bay is severely sloped and the slope map shows it. Yellow shows up at 4 percent slope and red at 10 percent. I try to avoid pins with more than 3 percent slope in Links ( 1/3 of the bottom o...

LIDAR Tutorial 1 – Creating Green Contours in QGIS

I started to put this tutorial in a post but quickly ran into the 6 attachments limit per post. So I printed the tutorial as a .pdf and was glad that it was under the 4MB file size limit. I hope those interested find it useful and informative. The next tutorial I will write is to make a full course ...

Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022

Lol! Yes that is some impressive 3D work! Even the recent 2022 Open coverage had some extremely good computer generated graphics. Normally I think that 3D work is not necessary for enjoying a round of golf in Links, but I am going to have to eat those words after watching The Open last weeke...

Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022

Yes, first thing I noticed when doing this course is that the 3m square grid of LIDAR elevations didn't show all the fairway undulations. There are a couple things that are working against me with the course I shared. I really like that fairway texture but it is bland and doesn't show the undulation...

St Andrews The Old Course 2022

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lAcj8vL0AjWzSdSYITkdcKy1-tcW8XCv?usp=sharing I doubled my efforts to have this ready for The Open this week but I came up short. I debated if to upload this as an alpha course but there is a lot to do still. The core areas of the course are complete (tees, fai...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses

For the USGS data site I gave a link for, search for a town near a course you are interested in in the upper right corner. Once you get the map centered roughly where the course is, go to the left side bar and select Elevation Products (3DEP). Select the 1m DEM data, and select All file formats. You...
