It worked for me - the simple trick is to use Select All then delete the objects, not to manually select your 2D objects before deleting them. Go figure. So you still lose your planting but at least everything else is in tact.

Thanks Lez. I didn't use the % removal tool, but I was using the forest tool on the course. So I definitely think its use is related to this somehow, now you mention it. The wierd thing is that the unplantable areas appear as squarish. They don't seem to have anything to do the shape I was using to ...

The final word. It keeps coming back as new random sections of the course suddenly become unplantable (or what is planted is gone or replaced with garble).
