Dan, When I get annoyed with it, I switch over to single-shot verts, and turn off the surface painter. That is exactly what I do. To get the vert count:
To reduce the number of verts:

First, select the verts in the area you want to simplify, and then select the percentage reduction,

Have you looked at an earlier rendition of Google Earth by moving the slider? This may give a better quality of photo.
