As a point of clarification in the event someone else has this same difficulty in the future, my computer is NOT a laptop computer. So the suggested fix also works (at least for me) on a regular PC.

I found a way to be able to view the sky by deleting all of the skies in the "Sky" folder. Then it apparently goes back to the default and is visible. It is always a clear sky but at least it isn't all always black.

I finally found a way to get the downloads and also to get the soundscripts to play. For some reason, I needed to delete all of the soundscripts in the Links 2003 folder except one and then it will play.

I was pretty sure I used to be able to see the ball in the Top Cam view but I wasn't certain. I tried reloading the entire Links 2003 set-up with the patches but still nothing.

Yes, it has Intel chips but it has been fine with several other computers I have had with Intel chips.
