LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs March 2001
Set amongst a wooded scene, with trees plentiful, this course has some great qualities. Without even playing this course, it has the visual look of wanting to simply walk the course. The lakes and running water, with the trees and scattering of rocks has a tranquil look and feel. Even the rabbit sat beside the small lake on the 2nd hole looks contented.
The course plays well, very few gripes in my opinion. The holes boast some narrow fairways and the odd careful planning for the 2nd shot keep you awake in the peaceful setting. The running water that crosses various fairways will cause a few second guesses for tee shots, and the layouts of the holes will appeal to all.
The hazards are worth talking about, because they look so good too. The lakes and running water sit will in the terrain, sunken as they should be. The positioning of the water makes it even more prominent too. The bunkers are well shaped, and treacherous to venture in. They sit nicely planted aside most fairways at the usual club lengths watching for stray balls.
Without causing any problems with the playability, there were a few things spotted, but hardly worth mentioning. Before the green on the 8th, there appeared to be a line folded in the rough that ran into the running water. The 13th fairway had the rough join it at a greatly elevated stance by the bunkers. This caused my lie to be virtually at right angles. The odd fairway here and there had some sharp fall away into the rough here and there too.; but that's the designer's prerogative.
All but to say the finale 18th made my day. This hole was in my head before I played this course, the risky tee shot to gain the better of the hole. I had actually drawn my hole for this kind of lure, but to see how well this 18th holds the lure was a delight. My compliments.

Doug Jensen's thoughts..
John Borycheski designed Falcon Ridge Golf Club. This is a mountainous course with lots of trees, sand and water both standing and running. Falcon Ridge is a great looking course that also plays very tough if you are not careful.
Visuals: Looks great. Very well designed.
Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Falcon Ridge Golf Club will test you as some your landing areas will contain sand traps, water or trees.
The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Falcon Ridge Golf Club will test you in many ways. Most of the pins on the greens are in very tough positions. You have a chance if you stay on the fairway with your drive but if not, you are in trouble. You will have to negotiate slope on some of the fairways that can also affect your shot to the green. There are some elevated greens that make your shot all that more important as well.
Putting: Putting is easy to moderate at Falcon Ridge Golf Club. If you can get it close after the tests you will face off the tee and on your approach, you will be awarded with a makeable putt but you will have some break to contend with.
Great course John. Good Luck on your next design.
