LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart March 2001

This is Michael Weiss's first contribution to the "Corner". He has started of with a doozy. A re-creation of a real PGA level course in Southern Florida. I have never really seen this course other than a few pictures on TV, but I must say the plot layout looks very accurate. It is a Southern Florida creation with a little desert here and there. That area of the world is one of the few places that the stock textures look very good. Due to the high sand content of the soil...the grass does not green too much except when over fertilized. So the stock textures look great. And I must say I like the idea of no panorama.....everybody knows we dont have one down here. And the hand crafted mountains/hills were enough to fill the void above the tree line.

Admin edit:
Contrary to Lacy's assertion, this course is actually a re-creation of a real course in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates and the original home of the Dubai Desert Classic.

I could tell that this designer must be German. Myself being of German descent and being married to one while living in Germany shows this to be factual. Germans tend to be perfectionists and his attention to even the most minute detail definitely shows in this design. The expertly crafted cartpaths, well planted trees, and the texture variations seem to match stroke for stroke to the actual course. It plays at 7054 yards from the back tees and could definitely be a struggle for the average PS player while clickers will still get a good amount of difficulty out of it. Each tee shot is a decision maker and club selection is crucial. I must say I like 90% of the course and it is very well done even for a difficult re-creation of a famous course. The few discrepancies I found will be discussed in the breakdown section later. Over all this was a very good job by Michael and he should be proud of his first design.

Custom amenities: Michael imported a few objects such as the geiser on hole #9 and the temple looking buildings around the course seem to be a custom object and they look very nice .

Greens: They look to be quite accurate in comparison to the real course but tend to be mostly flat other than a few holes on the back nine. As I said I am not too familiar with the real course so this may be what they are supposed to look like.

Fairways: They are also pretty refined in detail and are a challenge off the tee. Bending usually about the time the ball lands, these fairways are generally without slope with the exception of Hole #8. I would have liked to see a second cut of rough, but if that is the way the real course is...who could blame the designer for leaving them out.

Tee Boxes: They are normally flat and not that elevated but look very natural and well crafted. ball washers occupy the area just off the tee boxes.

Bunkers: They are well shaped but show no depth whatsoever. A little detail could have doubled the enjoyment of this design. It would not take more than a few hours to get them where they should be.

Water Hazards: Ponds and lakes look well crafted except for the rare stretched texture that is not that noticeable. Other than that they are exceptionally done.

Planting: The vegetation is naturally placed but due to the area not may trees occupy this course. The desert texture is more than enough to fill this void.

Best Hole: This is a tough decision. Its between holes #8, #9, and #18. I chose Hole #18 due to the overall difficulty. It is a rather long 555yard par 5 with water just prior to the green. Even with a tee shot of 270 yards and more, your 2nd shot must clear the water at 250 yards to safely make the green. This is the perfect example of Risk v/s Reward. The Temple looking buildings also add a nice touch to a good round of golf.

Overall: A re-creation of a real course is a difficult task. Attention to detail is paramount...and Michael has spared no expense. Other than the few flaws I noted earlier this is an excellent course to download. With a little work this could easily be in my top 5. Well done Michael.
