LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by
Chuck Clark
July 2002
Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Lamarand. It is a tiny download, so I am afraid my expectations are not very high.
Overall Impression: Well, this is obviously a first effort. It has very simple construction throughout. Stock textures, Aviara pano, repetitive planting and lots of errors. Not much else to say here, but I do think the layout shows lots of promise.
Playability: This course is generally playable, but definitely a bit mundane. The fairways and greens are generous and not too severe.
Shot Values: I can't think of anything interesting to say here.
Visuals: Very simply constructed golf course. As stated above, stock textures were used, simple planting was done, and the hazards are unfinished looking with no lips or refined edges. The course doesn't fit with the pano very well and there was (almost) no under planting or added objects. There is lots of water hazards which reflect everything in sight, but this is the only thing visually that adds anything at all.
Technique: Many errors were evident. Sharp edges were everywhere, bad undulations were also present, the back tee markers were invisible and so were the flags. Obviously there was a problem with the alpha channel in these objects or some way they were saved in whatever photo editing software program the designer was using. These things can be difficult to master; I have had lots of trouble with them myself. The planting was not very realistic and as mentioned above the pano didn't fit.
Summary: I can't recommend this course. There are just too many errors and it is just a bit too mundane. It is a tiny download though, so it may be worth your trouble. I did think the designer had lot of interesting hole designs though. I really hope he continues to try and build golf courses and doesn't let this review discourage him. I think he could make a really interesting golf course, once his abilities with the APCD catch up with his design talent.
I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
