LINKS CORNER REVIEW |

Introduction: This is the first course by Mr. Templeman (as far as I know). Every now and then a first time designer comes along and creates a masterpiece. Could it be like that this time too? I'm afraid not.
First impression: The splash screen is made from an aerial photograph of the course and it's a real beauty. The logo and readme file also show some class and really tease your appetite. The expectations drop pretty quickly once you see the first hole. It's a medium length par 4 where the first shot goes over water. The planting looks somewhat repetitive. There is a well made hole sign, but it's way too big and covers up a part of the view. The textures are good and fit one another well. Custom tee boxes are placed on standard tee shapes and the fairway texture is not mapped. Some good and some bad here. I not sure what to think about this course yet.
A walk through the course: The course is pretty flat and straight. Half of the holes have water to deal with. I'm only guessing, but probably the wind can become a factor on the real course. Especially the long par 3's can be very challenging under windy conditions. Some holes go along the shores and some go into the woods, so it's quite a varying course. I didn't use my middle irons (6,7) here. Typical is a drive and a short iron on the par 4's. All par 5's are reachable. Unfortunately, the APCD recreation doesn't come close to the real course's beauty, which we saw in the splash screen. There's a long array of errors along the way: sharp edges where they shouldn't be, chaotic mesh that creates strange shadows, inconsequent bunker and tee technique, oversized 3D objects, surfaces without texture, stretched textures (on vertical faces), bridges that are not level with the ground just to name a few. What really ruins the overall impression is the poor planting. Frequently, identical objects are placed next to one another and creates a double vision effect that make me check if my glasses are still on. The panorama is pretty good apart from a bad picture fitting which is visible on hole 15.
The verdict: I had a feeling I did a beta test instead of a review. The course really could have needed another round of testing. Everything around the course itself is excellent (splash, logo, readme, custom objects, sounds, panorama and textures). Planting, mesh cleaning and texture mapping needs improvements. Still, I can't help liking this course. Tim made a good job of advertising it. If I ever go back to that part of the world, I'll make sure to pay a visit.
Is it worth a download? The file size is decent, so why not. Make sure to turn up the wind and stop and listen to the ocean on the shore holes.
