LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by
Chuck Clark
July 2002

Background: This is the third golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Sim. I reviewed his first two courses, Paradise Bay and River Valley. These courses were crude but showed some potential. The first one (Paradise Bay) was definitely a first effort and had lots of errors. The second course was much better visually, but still had some serious playability issues. I am hoping the designer has 'put it all together' and really made a nice course here.

Overall Impression: Well, this course is much better from a playability standpoint, but there are still too many strange things about this course for me to recommend it. The first thing you will notice is that the same double tree object is used everywhere on the site. Now, when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere! This object is almost the only tree on the whole course! It is so redundant it is amazing. There are hundreds of trees included with the APCD for planting and you can make all the custom ones you want! Why anyone would use just one tree on the entire course is beyond me. The other thing that jumps out at you on this course is the objects included. There are numerous ball washers on most tees and lots of golf carts in places. On the seventh hole there must be 30 or 40 golf carts lining each side of the fairway. It was like the designer was 'planting' them like trees. It was truly bizarre!

Playability: Well, this course is much more playable than Mr. Sims last effort. The fairways are wider and the greens are better. Some of the course is extremely flat and some is nicely sloped.

Shot Values: I can't really think of anything to say here. This course really didn't push me much to reflect on anything.

Visuals: As stated above this course is very unusual from a visual standpoint. The planting is the most redundant I have ever seen; the tee box construction is very inconsistent; there are lots of unneeded objects such as ball washers and the ever present golf carts; the bunkers and lips are inconsistently finished; the water hazards are not flattened and appear to be above the level of the course at times; and there is some bizarre stuff like the 'stairs' on the ninth hole. I have never seen anything like these stairs (see picture) on any golf course. I know this course is classified as 'Imaginary' but those are really wacky!

Technique: There are still lots of technical errors and laws of physics broken here. There are sharp edges, inconsistently finished bunkers, unnatural water hazards and the planting as mentioned above.

Summary: Despite the tiny download size, I can't really recommend this course. This designer is making some progress, but he still displays many of the same errors of his earlier courses. My advice would be to get rid of the golf carts, use lots of different types of trees and bushes, learn how to consistently make bunkers and hazards; and remember that water is always flat and always below the surrounding land. Be consistent with your construction and learn how to spot those bad edges. Learn everything you can about the mesh and how to work with it. Use man-made objects sparingly, just like real courses. Have your course beta tested by some of the guys around here who are more than willing to help. But despite all that; please keep trying because you have some very neat ideas about golf holes!

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
