LINKS CORNER REVIEW

What a nice pleasant color combination he used for the tee boxes, mowed fairway, rough, deep rough greens and fringe. He blended in his bunkers with brown sand, which gave the course a 'low key' look that worked for me. His choices of trees may look repetitive at times but most of the pines planted so closely look similar even though there is a subtle difference. The asphalt path disappears into the course and doesn't stand out like a 'sore thumb'. I also see a mulch pathway besides the asphalt cart path, what the reasoning in that seems to escape me, but obviously its in the real course and is fairly innocuous looking. The combination of pine needles and bushes as an undergrowth gave this mountain course the woodland look of an old well taken care of course. I was a little disappointed that the pine needles on hole # 7 were different 'shades' in the 'forest' at the tee area, one side was distinctly lighter than the other, something a beta tester would have caught immediately. The tee areas were quite bare throughout the course and when he did try to add some objects such as on hole # 5 he came up short with an unattractive trash barrel.

The elevation and the caddie seemed to work quite well but there weren't too many extreme changes in elevation. The bunker construction was very nice but they didn't do a very good job of guarding the fairways but did you an excellent one when it came to the greens. The greens which were not huge to start with, in fact I would say that they definitely leaned toward the small side. The fairways were generous in size and were very easy to hit but the small guarded greens although easy in putting with their gentle breaks were fun. If you didn't hit the green and came up short they made for nice chipping either from the fairway or the fringe. The 4 par 5's: # 2, # 7, are reachable in two, # 11 is a short lay-up for the third shot. It took 15 holes before the water came into play and it was a par 5, 529y hole. It wasn't difficult at all if you didn't look at the water, easily reachable in two and a very good chance at an eagle if you are a good putter.

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to pay to play at this course because of the lack of imagination in the shapes of the holes, mostly hum drum long straight shots with very little challenge. With this being a depiction of a real course its not the fault of the designer but it seems to be the type of course you find close to home and it's always easy to get a tee time. I don't know how he packs so much planting into such a small download but he does. It is a very playable course and well constructed and one that I wouldn't just pass up looking for the spectacular only. I would recommend it for a download because of the nice putting, good fairways small download, playability, and good looks.

Addendum:

I received an interesting and informative email from the designer of this course Chas Demster, with some facts about the rendition of this 'real' course. It seems he is very proud, and he should be, of his creation. He informed me of a few errors, minor, but it shows how meticulous he was in the design. For one, even though the words 'Mt. View' are part of the course title it is a woodland course. It seems when I pointed out the difference in color of the pine needles on hole # 7 as being two different colors and that he should have taken more interest in keeping them looking the same, they are actually two different shades. One side is always just pine needles and the other is a mixture of needles, dirt and leaves giving them a different texture. I also pointed out that there was a mulch path besides the cart path although it wasn't marked as such it is a 'maintenance road'. He was most upset about my being critical of the 'trash cans' on a few holes, it turns out that they are sand containers for filling in the divots made when the golfers use their irons for the 3 pars. They aren't very attractive but are very accurate. He informed me that he is now starting work on a few more 'real' courses, known ones but not the 'big' tour ones we all think of. With his attention to detail I'm looking forward to them. Thank you for indulging both of us.
