LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon April 2001

This is one of 5 courses designed by Shane, and quite an interesting one it is too.

I would say this is definitely an imaginary course in a jungle setting, coconut trees abound, and you feel as if you are in the depths of South America or similar.

If you are looking for a challenge then look no further. This is one tough cookie, there is only one tee length and the total yardage for 18 holes is a staggering 7840!!! Add to this severely sloping fairways, tiny greens that twist and turn like a twisty turny thing, wind that never seems to be in the direction you want it, water hazards and bunkers!!

Some of the par 5's are so long you have trouble making the fairway off your tee shot.

As I have already said the course is very steep in places and it must have been a pig to design and put together because of the severe elevation changes, the most difficult I have seen, but on the whole Shane has handled them quite well, there are the odd mistake but nothing glaring and taken in context he has done really well.

The biggest downside to me was the finishing on the bunkers, which lacked depth as did the water hazards, there were some exceptions to this, on the 5th hole there were bunkers with rock faces, that looked good and fitted in well in their surroundings, wouldn't want to end up in one mind you!

Greens were well done and very difficult, tees were adequate, not finished off to a standard that is achievable but giving good views of the hole ahead.

One other fault I saw, which spoilt an gem of a view was on the 11th where you get a lovely sea view, but the texture to the sea got lost to a plain blue as it got near to the shore line.

Best Hole: There are some striking holes on offer here and I have had to decide between two, the 5th and the 8th. I have chosen the par 5 fifth which is almost 5 shaped, a downhill first between a set of bunkers edged with stone and with a stone edged lagoon to your left, your second should leave you with about 310 yards to go so a lay up is required followed by an uphill chip to the green which as usual breaks in all directions.

Overall: A very original, challenging course that is not without its errors but has a certain something about it.

Imaginary courses are not really my cup of tee, but in this case I will be keeping this on my hard drive, there is certainly enough here to keep you interested and it never falls into the ridiculous. It's also a small download which is again in its favour.

I hope Shane continues to improve and stay original but not get too carried away.
