LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by James Wood March 2001
First Impressions:
This is a fictional course with a park style setting. The first thing you will probably notice here is the planting. All of the trees on the course are lined up down the fairways, around the tee boxes, and around the greens. It's most noticeable in the top view. The rest of the course is wide open. There has been no under planting done here. The tee boxes have been extruded and are lined with brick. There is planting then added in the form of bushes around the outside of the brick. The fairways here are very square looking and there is a good reason for that. Faces were selected and then a fairway texture was applied. The tendency here is to keep the mesh looking clean by not moving the vertices in the XY axis. When you do this though shapes tend to stay square looking. This includes the bunkers and water. It is better to split edges and turn them to get more faces to work with. Then by moving the vertices in XY you can achieve more natural looking shapes. The other thing you notice is that the bunkers don't quite look right. The faces are a little steep and have a few bad edges. Normally this is because the inner guard ring has held the surface in place and then when the bunker was extruded it created a steep face that is unnatural looking. It would have been better to have used an outer guard ring and let the inner surface fall away with a more natural look. The water on the other hand looks quite nice. There is a nice edge that has been properly turned. For some odd reason a second cut of rough is applied to the fairways but instead of using a rough texture of some sort the stock fringe texture was applied. The greens here have some very interesting shapes but some of them are very large. In general though the course was well done and there was a lot of good effort applied here.
Strategy:
I chose to play this course in windy conditions. That wasn't a very good idea. With the trees lining every fairway this will get you into all kinds of trouble. If you hit the ball poorly enough though you can then play in the clear because you've overshot the trees. Many of the fairways are of the split variety and many of the tee shots here require fades or draws. The putting can be difficult because of the size of the greens. On one of the par 5's I chose to chip the ball after reaching the green in 2 because I was still over 20 yards from the hole. There is quite a bit of water on the course and the bunkers are numerous and placed in good spots to catch errant shots. I played very poorly on this course but it was mostly due to the wind in combination with the trees.
Favorite Hole:
Hole #5 Par 3. Good looking par 3 here.
Overall:
This is a pleasant course with a lot of good challenge to it. It's probably not a course you'll want to keep as part of your permanent collection but you'll enjoy playing it a few times. The file size here was a little large due to the variety of trees used. This course could have probably been kept on the smaller side very easily.
