LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' June 2002

The colors chosen for the tee boxes, mowed fairway, light rough, heavy rough, greens and fringe were all standard and more than acceptable. The fields of 'scrub' both in green or brown made this course heavier than it should have been. The green scrub looked quite nice and the brown was more than passable. Why do I say the course was larger because of the scrub only, there weren't any trees on a parkland course, not one. Yes you could see some off in the distance as background along with the housing but none on the course and it wasn't a 'links' course. I guess its easier and faster to build a course with little planting, if trees had been added to the course along with the scrub it would have rendered very slowly, if at all. The fairways were narrow but would usually widen at the landing point. The greens were oddly shaped and were medium or a touch smaller. They were completely flat on some holes and sloped, tiered, undulated beyond reason on others, see hole # 4 par 5. The pin placements, which I have set on easy, were not easy.

The caddie and the elevations on this course were very well executed. The bunkers although well placed on greens were a little long on the fairways to be a problem of any kind. The bunkers were quite well made although not of the caliber of the ones we see on the better courses. The errors were quite evident in both the top views and in the main view. You could see the dark lines in the screenshot of hole # 2, par 4, and the extreme over-sloping of the greens in the screenshot of the # 4 hole, par 5. His par 5 holes were very unreasonable in length, the # 10 par 5; 764y was a long narrow fairway with only one bunker near the green. As long as you hit the snap you were safe but all you did was hit, hit, hit, unbelievable strategy. The # 17 par 5; 662y, hole didn't have any bunkers and the hazard for this hole was to make it narrow. As the course progressed there were less and less bunkers, I imagine he was getting bored, that made two of us. He ended the hole with a 3 par, a strange choice but a welcome one. It was over quickly.

His first course 'Fedrich' was much simpler but not much better, it was an amateurs three par. He still didn't seek the advice of other designers or beta test. How he believes that he can get to be a designer by not trying to better himself with the more than willing help of his peers is beyond me. It's quite obvious that he rushes this attempts at courses because of all the items listed in the not included list. You want to try it, go ahead, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and this is a definite 'no download' course.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
