LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chuck Clark May 2002

Background: This is the second golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Larsson. His first course was called Seven Oaks and was reviewed by Dave Campbell. Seven Oaks was a promising first effort by Mr. Larsson, based on the comments of Dave. Hopefully, Glenfiddich is better in many ways.

Overall Impression: Well, after reading Dave's review of Seven Oaks and looking at the pictures of that course, I hate to say it, but Glenfiddich is not much of an improvement. It is an interesting course to play with lots of unusual holes, but there were too many technical errors and weird happenings to seriously consider Glenfiddich a great course. It is a woodsy, mountain type course with lots of pine trees, creeks and a hilly pano. There were some good elevation changes and hilly lies, and some fun and unusual uses of planting. Unfortunately, many of the holes are placed right on the edge of the plot, so the underside of the pano is exposed occasionally. There was a road and a house on the lower part of the pano that occasionally was visible right along side of a hole. It looked like a car might drive right across the fairway at times.

Playability: This course is generally very playable. Some of the greens are unnaturally sloped and have some bad edges though. And it is pretty easy to hit the ball right off the plot resulting in OB balls too.

Shot Values: There is a good variety of shots asked for here. I liked the drivable par 4 seventeenth hole. The eighteenth is kind of strange though. The fairway is divided into two sides by a creek, and there are two other creeks along the outside of the fairway as well. It is kind of like bowling, you just have to pick your lane first. Don't go in the gutter!

Visuals: This course has some very interesting and bizarre sights to see. The second hole has a planter area right in front of the green (see picture). There is also a fake waterfall next to the thirteenth tee. How do I know it is not real? It has to be, because the running water starts at the top of a sharp isolated hill, with the water coming out of some rocks. There is no where else the water could have come from except from a pump. It looks just like the fake waterfalls you see in people's back yards. Despite these things, the planting is pretty good, except for the between hole areas. There is no planting at all in most of these areas. I did like some of the work around the little creeks. There were done very well, with good planting techniques and the use of fences and such. I also liked the rock work displayed here and there. It was good looking and planted very well.

Technique: This is the major place that this course fails. It has lots of technical errors. There are bad shadows and sharp edges galore. Placing the holes right on the edge of the plot, no in-between hole planting and unnatural water hazards and planting add to the disappointment. Creeks seem to start and stop with no rhyme or reason. The bunkers were not finished very well either. The edges were rough and the bottoms were not shaped right.

Summary: I can't really recommend downloading this course. It is interesting and kind of fun to play in many ways, but there is just too many errors to recommend it. I liked some of the ideas for holes, a lot of the rock work and some of the planting as well. But as mentioned above there were lots of quirky stuff on this course. I would really like to see this designer take some time to really refine his techniques. I would also like to see him try and make his courses more realistic. Creeks don't start and stop for no reason. Beta testing could really help find a lot of these types of errors. The designer has some great strategic ideas for golf holes and definitely has some talent; it just needs to be polished.
