LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' June 2002
This is his first course and he calls it and 'imaginary' one, it played, looked and seemed to be more of a fictional course in the broad sense to me. The course had fine looking mowed tee boxes, mowed fairways, textured roughs, (no first cut) and checkerboard greens with a blended fringe. The tee areas were a little sparse and the trees could have used an undergrowth of some kind but considering the size of the download something had to give and they seemed to be the logical choice. The bunkers were well made and the water hazards had wood planking lining the sides. The fairways for the most part were on the narrow side and the greens kept changing in size as well as in shape throughout the course. The course seemed to be built around the water hazards and the small stream. The greens started out to be sloped but not that difficult and slowly turned into flatter or tiered ones with slight breaks as the course progressed.
The elevation changes were not extreme and the caddie worked well also. The drive on a great deal of the holes were over water and the landing area usually had a fairway bunker or two waiting for you The # 5 hole was an valiant attempt at a risk/reward hole that didn't pan out, it was too easy but you have to give him credit for trying. The greens could have used a little more bunker protection and the already mentioned fairway bunkers weren't that large to give you a great deal of problems. The main obstacle besides the water was the size of the fairways, miss, and you're in the drink. He was quite meticulous in his building of many aspects of this course, many of the courses that pass through here say 'X' amount of tees markers but there always aren't the same amount on every hole, he saw to it that there was, the same for the ball washers, I'll wait for the laughs to die down, they were consistent also. A nice course that plays well can come down to details. He used a great deal of imagination on this course and I would like very much to see him build a true fictional course sometime, with beta testing. I think he did an admirable job on this very small download, its not going to win any awards but it can be a welcome diversion from the few championship ones that we have been fortunate to get lately. At 14.5mb it is a worthwhile download, please don't expect 'the son of Spyglass' here. Enjoy it for what it is.
