LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' April 2002

This is the seventeenth listed course from Bill and I have reviewed 3 or 4 of his, this seems to be the best of the lot as far as I can see. If it was more fiction than fantasy I believe it would have been a more realistic and better playing course. As for the sounds that he used, I didn't mind the birds, frog's aircraft but that water was a little loud at times and in all probably counts for increasing the size of this download. The deep blends of colors he used for the flat looking tee areas, unmowed but slightly textured fairways, faint fringe before the heavy looking rough and the slightly checkerboard greens were all in the very acceptable range. His use of color for the heavily wooded hills were at least somewhat muted or else it would have been overwhelming. The hills also served as his pano. His brightly colored trees interspersed with the assorted green ones seemed to fit the fantasy mode. The gray sand in the bunkers seemed soothing in comparison to the heavy use of color. His use of brush around the water hazards and the creek that ran throughout the course was quite attractive.

Fortunately the course played much better that the colors seemed to indicate. He started with a 5 par and ended with two 5 pars, a most effective idea, especially when the closing hole was a 614y 5 par and quite the 'fun' hole with the fairway hazards that he placed in your way. As far as risk reward holes go he had a few of those but not of the best quality, they were the kind that were easily defeated. The fairways were quite ample and it way a joy to haul off and miss that bottom snap without dire consequences but there were also the few narrower ones that you had to watch out for. The greens were mostly flat but then again he slipped in a few over-sloped in my opinion, tiered greens. The majority were of medium size and easy putting. The fairways were well guarded, something he didn't do in his earlier courses and the greens had quite a few bunkers, some very well placed. The elevation and the caddie seemed to be in good shape, just watch out for the few elevated greens.

# 8 hole, par 4, 387y, this could have been one of those good 'risk reward' holes that we all enjoy but I didn't have a chance to carry the creek that bisected the fairway. I instead had to go to a 3w for 257y and that left me 137y to the pin on a rather small green guarded by a creek on one side and a large bunker on the other. Don't hit too long because this is a tiered green and all you will do is to succeed in rolling back into the creek. It's a very heavily sloped green.

# 12 hole, par 4, 304y, aiming just to the right tip of the fairway bunker I used a draw 3w to take me 247y, which was 47y shy of the pin.

# 13 hole, par 4, 386y, I aimed to the left of the top of the fairway bunker; if you get to close to the right the tree will stop you. I had a drive of 289y, and 87y to the pin.

# 14 hole, par 3, 160y, 42.5ft elevation, with a center front pin placement I chose a 6 iron and found it to be the perfect club. I moved the ball to the right of the tee to avoid the tree on the left, I advise you to do the same.

This was as close to a fictional course as you can get and still be called fantasy; it's in the colors with this course not in hole shapes. His hole shapes are getting better, his courses are obviously getting better as time goes on and its evident that he enjoys designing them and tries to build them with more imaginative holes each time. He also is putting bunkers and other hazards in the right places to make the courses he builds a bit more of a challenge. The only drawbacks on this course are the few over-sloped greens. I would very much like to see him build a good fictional course and put it out for beta testing, but that might ruin the fun he has of building them and that's the last thing I'd want to do. Do you want this course, if it weren't so large a download for most 56k'ers I would say yes, definitely. If you want to take the time to download it on a dial-up please do so and you will enjoy the course. For all others get it, play it, I don't see it as a keeper but I do see it as a course that can be fun to play.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
