LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' April 2002
This reproduction of a real course needed to be reworked when it was first released and the designer wisely took a good course made a few important changes and has put out a very fine course in version two. His colors and textures from the mowed fairways to the checkerboard greens look very well together although it is difficult to imagine a TPC course without a first cut. He used big heavy bushy trees and good undergrowth to make this small download appear larger than it is. The fairways range from the ample and easy to hit to the narrow and hittable but challenging. The greens although small, narrow and long in most cases are a peasant change from the norm. He used bunkers at the right places in the fairways and the greens are well guarded. The majority of the greens have very gentle breaks that cause you to putt with care and sink quite a few birdies. There are a few, very few sloped green and they are not as bad as they sound.
I found this course to be very interesting in its minor elevation changes on the second shots and with the help of a very good caddie and excellent elevation work it was very enjoyable. The bunkers were there, but they and the water hazards they didn't seem to come into play very often even though they looked, as they did on the number 18 hole, like they would. The fairways were flat but I seemed to get the extra few yards with a good roll just about every time and it showed in my average at the end.
# 5 hole, par 5, 550y, and a 54ft drop, this 'S' shaped fairway has bunkers, water and a cart path crossing it but none of them seems to be a problem. Oh yes, you have a blind drive. I aimed above and passed the first bunker and drove 300y. With only 178y left to the pin an adjusted 5 iron landed 7ft from the cup, an eagle so early in the round? I hope that this is a sign of things to come, I think not.
#17 hole, par 5, 550y, a minor dogleg to the left with a long narrow fairway. The fairway for the drive was utterly devoid of bunkers, which gave me, a safe drive of 285y, leaving me 262y to a small green with 5 bunkers both before and surrounding it. I had to pick out a safe landing area for my 3w which was made easier by the fact that the fairway widened considerably the closer you came to the green. I went straight for the pin and with a shot of 255y I was only left with a fairway shot of 23ft to the cup, easy pin position and an interesting hole.
This course as I find with most 'real' courses is not overloaded with highly imaginative holes but is very well laid out to make for an interesting and challenging round. I had played version one and the putting was perfectly flat on that course, with the breaks on this version it wasn't too difficult but the course gave you more of a game now. With the narrow fairways and the small often bunker guarded greens this would be an excellent course to try with wind of some kind, yes, then it would definitely be a challenge. Not only because of its small download but also because of its quality of pleasure I would highly recommend this course for downloading and for on line play.
