LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chuck Clark April 2002
Background: Four courses were released to Links Corner on March 15th by Mr. Davis. Has anyone else noticed the significance of this date? The soothsayer's warning to Julius Ceasar, "Beware the Ides of March," has forever imbued that date with a sense of foreboding. Was Mr. Davis trying to tell us something? It would seem so, considering the quality of these courses. Without opening or playing this course, I can tell you from the file size that there is absolutely no objects added, no custom textures, no custom graphics, no added sounds and probably the same few trees or plants used over and over. The course must be very simple and probably flat. Maybe I will be surprised, but I doubt it.
Overall Impression: Well, I was wrong about one thing, this course is definitely not flat. Quite to the contrary, it is ridiculously elevated, with greens and fairways raised up or dropped down from the surrounding terrain like some kind of minature golf course on steroids. Mr. Davis just grabbed the greens and pulled them up or down by the verts until they almost touch the sky or reached the core of the earth. The first green is almost impossible to reach with any club it is so high above the fairway (see picture). The second green is pulled down into such a deep pit, that you can't ever see the green, even if you are standing right on the edge of the precipice. To say this course is poorly done and unplayable is actually understating it. I would like to say I finished my round, but I didn't. I looked at all the holes in practice mode, but some of them were completely unplayable. There were a number of fairways that were elevated more than 100 feet above the tee. There were some (like the third) where you couldn't hit anything more than a six iron off the tee. On the third especially, this was a real problem, since this is a 640 yard par 5. All of the non-fairway or green areas were textured with something called buttercups. It is classified as a hazard, so if you miss the fairway by one inch you are in a hazard! I checked it out in the APCD and this is a flower bed texture from the Aviara course. Needless to say, this is pretty silly!
Playability: This course is completely unplayable!
Shot Values: See above.
Visuals: Don't even get me started!
Technique: There was a famous coach who was once asked about his teams execution that day. His response was something like 'execution, that would be a good idea, maybe we should try that next time'. I would have the same to say thing about Mr. Davis' technique.
Summary: This is not a good course. I can't recommend it to anyone. I hope Mr. Davis gets some beta testers before releasing his next course, and realizes that golf courses (along with Rome) are not built in a day!
