LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Additional Review by James Wood

Background: As far as I know this is the first course released by Mr. Boltz. I don't know this for sure, but I would guess that this is the best 'first course' ever done. There is an extensive read-me and I suggest you check it out before playing HW. It is quite interesting and well done. This is a fictional course set in a rolling woodsy area. The designer achieved this goal with hard work and careful planting. This course has been enthusiastically received by the members of Links Corner and it is not hard to see why.

Overall Impression: A beautiful woodsy course set in a fine hilly country setting. This is a course that immerses you into the environment like Xilver Plaine or AlabamA. It is a joy to look at and a lot of fun to play as well. The textures and planting are very well done and add to the experience. This course is no pushover though. It has some narrow fairways at times (see below) and some pretty sloping greens too. It will probably be pretty tough on the Champ player (either click or ps). But this is such a beautiful course, you don't really mind if your score is not up to snuff.

Playability: As mentioned above, this course is a bit tight and sloping at times. It is a very hilly course as well, so you better have a good idea how much club to add or subtract from hilly lies. It is quite playable though, if you aim carefully and pick the right club. There are dazzling hole previews included and I suggest you use them. Don't stray into the woods though or your score will suffer severely.

Shot Values: This is a wonderful course for presenting lots of different shots. You have got lots of up and downhill shots, lots of side hillers and everything in between. There are some good risk/reward holes and split fairways too. I would have liked a reachable par 4 somewhere here, but that is only a small quibble.

Visuals: Like I mentioned above, this is a beautiful golf course environment. I can't say enough about the tranquil and woodsy setting the designer created here. Very well done!

Technique: The technique used here was outstanding. I could not find a single serious error (or any frivolous ones either). The planting, the hazards, the extrusions, you name it, it was well done.

Summary: This is a fantastic golf course for Links 2001. I heartily recommend it to everyone. Even considering the size, you slow connection guys will still want to go download this one. The greens may be a bit severe for some and the fairways a bit narrow, but those are small potatoes compared to what you will be missing if you pass this one up. Great job Ken!

James Wood's thoughts..

Course Overview

This is a fictional course set in a parkland setting. A typical American country club environment. Nice planting was done here and the consistency is evident throughout the round. Not too many objects are apparent here with the occasional old building, bridge, and the usual trash cans, etc. on display. The textures used blend in very well together as does the choice of panorama. They are hardly noticeable during the round and that indicates good choices were made. You get the impression that the course plays fairly short from the back tees until you reach a few of the holes on the back nine. I found myself using every club in the bag here so that implies a good mix of short and long holes.

Tips for Playing the Course

Fine tune the course to whatever conditions you like. The course plays fairly easy for the Pro Clicker with no wind but you can easily ratchet up the difficulty by changing the conditions.

The greens are fair and the fairways are a good width. Elevations are not to the extreme and hazards are fair and well laid out.

This should be a good course for any type of player.

Favorite Hole

I aced the par 3 12th hole with a 4I from the back tees on the fly. That gives this hole the nod for me.

Overall

The course is very well laid out. It never wanders over into the fantasy realm. The course is fairly non-descript until you reach the 12th hole. From there the course really shows a lot of class and good ideas. The APCD work is outstanding and that includes all aspects. The 18th was very scenic although I would have loved to have seen a nice risk/reward finishing hole from the back tees. The course looks well suited to host a one-on-one online match. Birdies can be had and so can the occasional bogey as you come down to the final few holes. This was a very good effort and that effort shows at every turn. This one should remain a fan favorite for quite some time.

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
