LINKS CORNER REVIEW |

March 2002
This course has a deep lush color to the tee areas, mowed fairways, and first cut. The greens are paler in color with a well defined fringe. The course is very heavily planted with the occasional color tree mixed in with the assortment of normal growth. He didn't use the common undergrowth that we are used to seeing, he used small amounts of bush at the base of many of the trees in the foreground to prevent the 'floating tree' syndrome. The hazards consisted of well placed fairway bunkers, water, patches of rough and the occasional tree, it was most effective and attractive also but easily avoided by not getting too aggressive in your driving. The greens had bunkers guarding them but seemed harmless with the distances of the approach shots. The water hazards were very nicely lined with heavy rock walls and the smaller ones had large rocks and plants, a most attractive course
The elevation and the caddie worked well. The fairways were mostly fair in size but did lean more to the narrow, especially when the 5 pars came into play. The greens were fair also but not quite medium, he tiered most of them so getting close to the cup was a greater advantage here than on most courses. When you were close to the cup the putting was easy with minor breaks.
#9 hole, par 5, 615y, this 'S' shaped fairway was separated by 2 patches of rough. My drive was consistently thwarted by a tree not placed as a hazard but as an impediment to play, a poor choice for this course. I moved my ball to the left side of the tee and hit a punch drive to the left of an already narrow fairway; I bypassed the tree, barely, and landed 283y in the first cut. A ridiculous situation but the only one that seemed feasible. My next shot was a 7 iron for 170y and I was now 176y from the pin. An exasperating hole not a strategic one.
#16 hole, par 5, 679y, this long narrow fairway had a bunker on the left that stretched form 242y to 348y and a small one on the right at 240y. A steady drive of 281y and I was safe with a second to an area that had a left and right bunker and a tree just before the left bunker. My 3w took me between the bunkers leaving me 146y to the pin, a normal 8 iron and I was well within birdie range. Over swinging on this very long hole wouldn't serve any useful purpose.
This with the exception of a poorly laid out hole, # 9, this was a very engaging and entertaining course. With the hazards that were well placed on the fairways and the medium-small greens proved to be a challenging course that would probably be very interesting with a little wind and a change from my settings on the greens. Well thought out, attractive, makes it sound like a good download, well it is, and I believe that it will be a sleeper this month, unfortunately. No it's not a 'great' imaginative course but it is one that you will enjoy playing and I hope you will try it.
