LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Background: I think this is a first course, but I could be wrong. Mr. Lantanville does not have any other courses listed at Links Corner. As for background I will let Mr. Lantanville speak (from the Read-Me) for himself:

'I am 'The Eagle Man' Richard Latanville, the creator. On THE ZONE I am with the OFC known as OFC_EagleMania. This course is not like any other, it is not real. My goal in my course is combining challenge and beauty into the course. The Challenge: It is over 7700 yards from the back tees. In some hole I will urge you to check with the hole previews then check by feeling out the target on the top view. It is not how hard you hit it, it's where you hit it. I will tell you hole by hole on what you will expect. It's a championship golf. Don't like it tough meat, play the ladies tees. The Beauty: I added numerous trees by shape, size and colours. There is clusters of trees might be the same but others are quite different. Some sizes can tower over your shots, do be careful. The colours blends in by creating trees that are no leaves, brown, green, yellow, orange, red and even pink. It is a fall atmosphere capturing golfers eyes enjoying every shots available from all points of the course. I added 5 tee boxes with brilliant colourations'.

Overall Impression: This is a parkland course using the Whistler pano. It has some interesting and bizarre holes. It is long and at times very tough. There are many types of trees and objects. Unfortunately, the designer's ability with the APCD is sorely lacking. There are numerous technical errors and distractions. They detract from what could be a very interesting golf course.

Playability: This course is not very playable. There are many places where the glaring errors result in shots being almost impossible to successfully attempt. There was one fairway that I hit a perfect drive (right down the middle) and watched as my ball rolled off a severely sloping fairway into a bunker. There are also greens that have huge slopes that would take your ball right into a sand trap if you miss the hole. The bunkers are a twisted and convoluted mess in places. The designer just inserted the shapes and walked away. There has obviously been no mesh cleanup done on this course at all.

Shot Values: Well, as mentioned above, there are just too many errors to seriously discuss this subject.

Visuals: There are definitely some interesting visuals on this course. Just look at the picture from the first tee above. When you first open the course you are confronted with a blind shot between the club house and a satellite dish. And this shot is to an island green no less. There are a number of other blind shots. The course does have an interesting collection of objects and planting. But there is just too much of this stuff for my taste. The course is cluttered looking at times with these things. I did like the graveyard behind the sixth green though (see below). It was quite a surprise when I hit over this green and ended up chipping back from amongst a group of headstones.

Technique: As mentioned above, the APCD technique used here is not good. There are many glaring errors (see image).

Summary: This is not a well done golf course. I cannot recommend downloading it to anyone. The designer has some great ideas for golf holes, but he needs to back them up with a lot more time and effort with the APCD. There are just too many technical errors on this course.

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
