LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Pete Dixon April 2001
This is a fictional seaside links course and the second design I have seen from Jim.
I have to say from the off that I really like this course, it has the feel of a Links course the moment you look from the first tee, not a links course from say the North West of England or Scotland, more a look of a seaside course on the Devon or Dorset coast or maybe Norfolk.
Jim is the designer of Winterbourne River, one of the earlier releases, and one that is still on my hard drive, this is another winner and at a relatively small 20MB download.
The design and layout is excellent, custom fairways are the right colour and all the planting, textures etc blend in perfectly and give an excellent feel.
The fairways undulate as they should for this sort of course and there are some double greens to be found to.
The planting is superb, lots of low bushes of heather, gorse etc and this is a course that definitely benefits from the dynacam feature that is now available.
Bunkers are also well done and placed in tricky locations ready to catch your drive or approach shot, they are 'normal' bunkers as opposed to pot bunkers normally associated with links golf but they fit in well with the surroundings. In fact my only real gripe is with the bunkers, we are getting spoilt now, and these are not as good as some out there, don't be put off they are still very nice but could be better.
This is also a long course, 7400 yards from the back tees, so it is a real challenge especially with the sloping lies and uphill shots, some of the holes are really long and there is a great risk/reward factor throughout, try it on windy with fast greens and I think you will find this some challenge.
Greens are large and have plenty of breaks, the size means they are fairly easy to hit but not easy to get near the pin.
You also get a rocky coastline and beach as you complete the final 4 or 5 holes, which look good and add to the atmosphere of the course, buildings and furniture are sparse but this doesn't detract from the overall effect.
Best Hole: This is such a tough decision as there are so many to choose from. It is such a difficult choice that I am going to sit on the fence and say just play the course and enjoy them all.
Overall: If you want a course that recreates a South of England links course then this is it.
It has escaped a lot of the limelight with so many excellent courses appearing at the moment, but let me tell you, this is right up there in my opinion.
If you haven't downloaded it yet then trust me and do it now.

Lacy Gearheart's thoughts..
A very good Southern English Links style course that not only has great visuals, but offers a distinct challenge. A definite must for your course library
