Background: This is the first course released by Mr. Sim. There was little notice of this course when it came out. Reviews were mixed at best. The course is listed as Imaginary, so it may be interesting. The read-me has no information at all, so we are left to ourselves to figure this course out.
Overall Impression: This is a tropical looking course with palm trees and lava rock here and there. It is ridiculously long at 8266 yards. There are seven par 4's of 490 yards or longer. In addition to the length, the fairways are not very wide, which makes for a pretty tough round of golf. There are objects galore with golf carts, power boats and leader boards a common occurrence. Many of the holes are severely up or downhill. The greens are generally just the stock shape that the APCD defaults too when you first create a course. There are many technical errors and weird occurrences. There are places where the water is not flat, defying the laws of physics and gravity. There is one hole which is 70 feet below the surface of the bordering lake. I would be pretty scared to play this hole in real life; you could drown if there is a break in the 'levy'. In short, there is a lot of weird stuff on this course.
Good Points: I played all eighteen holes here and really could not find anything that I liked too much, sorry.
Not So Good: There were numerous errors and technical glitches here. There were sharp edges galore, floating objects, lakes that were not flattened, dead flat greens and wildly sloping greens, rows of trees along side the fairways and many other things. There was only one tee maker on the ninth and fourteenth holes, which result in a red maker. This is a pet peeve of mine. If you have 5 tee markers on one hole, then you have to have 5 tee markers on every hole. As mentioned before, the planting was not well done. Many of the fairways had a row of trees along each side (see below). It was all very phony looking to say the least. I could go on forever, but I won't.
Summary: To summarize, this course needs a lot of work. This is a first effort so we have to give the designer a thumb's up for effort. He needs to work on his APCD techniques, believability, playability and a few other things as well. I think with time and hard work, he may become a great designer. Oh and please don't disobey the laws of nature either. Water is always flat and usually below the level of the surrounding terrain. I can't recommend this course unless you like hitting lots of long irons and fairway woods out of rough, because that is what you will be doing a lot of if you play this golf course. It is a small download, but not really worth the effort. Check back with this designers second effort, hopefully he will have corrected some of his mistakes by then.
I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
