LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Costal Dunes - Designed by Bud McNew

Reviewed by James Wood May 2001

First Impressions:

This course is listed as real. I can't find any information on it however so I don't know whether it was mislabeled or not. The lakeside panorama was used here and it looks totally out of place. The very dark texture of the rough combined with a very light textured fairway also doesn't look right together. The fairways and rough cuts, fringes, and bunkers have been extruded but the edge has not been turned so there is a steep drop-off. Some of the tee boxes have been extruded down making it seem like you're teeing off out of a hole in the ground. The planting is widely varied with palm trees, fir trees, pine trees, weeping willows, and other trees. There are flower boxes planted near most of the tee boxes with wooden landscaping timbers. Some of the objects used in particular the bridges and benches are out of scale. Asphalt cart paths are present and these look good. The fairways are wide with a first cut of rough.

Strategy:

Not much strategy is involved in playing the course. The fairways are very flat and most of the greens have very little break. All four par 5's are reachable in two shots. A very easy course to score well on as the hazards should not come into play on most of your shots.

Favorite Hole:

The par 4 6th hole probably had one of the best-looking tee shots.

Overall:

The course is certainly not as bad as it first appears and it does have its moments. I would say the mistakes that were made all fall into two categories. Sharp edges and poor planting choices. The first mistake is easy to fix and the second takes a little more effort because planting is not something that may come natural to most people. The designer may wish to look at some of the better-planted courses and try to emulate the patterns he sees in them. I'll include the color clashes in the choice of textures as part of the planting problem. I wouldn't recommend this one for downloading as there are far too many better choices.
