LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

January 2002

While I am calling this a links course it varies slightly from the run of the mill ones. His has a stream running through it, scrub grass on the sand dunes, buildings, a canal, and stone walls amongst other objects including an American flag implanted in the ground at the # 18 green. Many of the greens had a distinct fringe and the fairways at times had a slight but obvious change in texture so you could tell them from the roughs. The water hazards had an attractive and unusual 'lining' (with matching bridges) that made them stand out from the ordinary but fit into the sparseness of the links style. Unfortunately the only consistency here was inconsistency, the attractive elevated rock trimmed tee boxes disappeared and then reappeared, the color of the tee boxes were at times very distinct and at times couldn't be told from the fairway. Many of the greens had double flags as is the custom of many links course so check before you assume you know where to hit your ball, it can be quite deceptive.

The elevations and caddie, most important in this type of course was excellent. The putting was both easy and moderate depending which of the postage stamp size greens you were using at the time. Water (stream), sand dunes, and bunkers were the hazards on this course and were used quite effectively on both the fairways and surrounding the greens. Great imagination was shown in shaping the holes and with the numerous hazards proved to be and interesting course.

#3 hole, par 5, 559y, you would think that the fairway was on the right but that is a section outlined by a stream, a difficult hole to figure at first. Driving between the two pothole bunkers and the stream seemed to make the most sense even though it was a small area, 285y with 267y to go to the green. The green is carefully guarded by the stream and a large bunker. A 3w took me to the fringe followed by a 35ft chip, an interesting hole to play.

#5 hole, par 4, 280y, you can reach the green in 1, 289y with a 10.9ft putt. What you have to remember on this hole is that cutting across the stream at such a distance can be hazardous to the health of you ball, they can't swim, and the water looks deep.

#18 hole, par 5 578y, this like all the other holes it is filled with hazards on the fairways and greens, and sand dunes, going between the water on the left and pot holes on the right was the best landing spot, 290y, with 262y to this very small green guarded by the stream and three bunkers. It can be reached by an overswing of a 3w but it's safer to layup with a 2 iron 233y,m and have a 30y lw to the flag, this still makes it a birdie hole.

The links style course is a departure from the usual styles that Chuck is known for, his previous 4 courses are Box Canyon Fantasy, Crocodile Falls Golf Course (my favorite), Crowning Hills and GCRugged Coast CC. This course as with most links courses you have to pay close attention to the flag because of the blend of the fairway and the rough giving you at times a false impression as to which way is up. He used very good imagination on this course and as I stated before possibly too many unusual objects on the course for a links purist. At 11.4mb it is a nice small download for someone looking for something ' different' to play on.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
