LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
December 2001
This course is listed as an 'F', to me it usually means fiction this course I would almost put in the fantasy category. The overly bright colors, the huge rock formations and the holes are not like a normal course would have. Saying that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy playing this course, I did. As I said the trees and surroundings were bright, the green areas, tee boxes, roughs, mowed fairways and greens looked well together. His use of smaller rocks and bushes made this seem like a much bigger download than it was.
If you can get passed the 'gaudy' looks of this course you will find that practically every hole had some degree of difficulty. Most of it from minor to extreme elevation changes. The hole shapes were all very imaginative; the slopes of the undulating fairways were a grand addition to the course. His elevation and caddie were excellent; they had to be on this forever changing course.
3rd hole, par 5, 666y, with a 45y drop, there is wild grass blocking the fairway but your best shot should land short of it, 304y for me. With 388y with a 21y drop a 3w was too much club and I went with a 2iron for 239y and then had an 114y with a 28ft drop left. Next a flop pw put me in birdie shape.
12th hole, par 5, 598y, a hole shaped like a '?' question mark, I aimed for the fairway bunkers landing 276y and well short of the bunkers. Now my trusty flop 3w took me 223y but left me 53ft to the cup, a poor green position. I went back (reviewers option) and tried a cut across to the fairway in front of the green, instead of the previous green shot. This worked much better, I used a 2 iron to the front and it left me with 44y to the flag, smarter but not as much fun.
14th, hole, par3, 158y, 42y drop, a single adjustment up for my 9 iron did the trick for me.
This unusual looking course was more than it looked. This was a pleasure to play, imaginative fun holes with plenty of elevation changes, moderate sized fairways, and nice sized greens. Some of the hazards were actually hazards not just there to be there. A small download, a strange looking challenging course makes this an excellent bet for a download and an enjoyable 'different' round. I would think you would have a good time here and since I try not to grade on looks but on playability, try it.
